Adopting an adorable lb shih Tzu tomorrow and wanted to know if anyone knew of a more budget friendly flea and tick preventative drops? We use K9 Advantix II on my boxer, but I'm looking to switch if there's something better.

Thanks!

I have a Bichon and a havanese. I buy the biggest dose of frontline plus. I bought a brown vial and ml syringe and measure out the correct dosage. The Bichon is tiny and she gets .3 ml. The hav gets .7 ml. I spend about $30/year on both dogs.

I've used the frontline spray to split between 4 dogs and 2 cats. It's inexpensive and effective.

We use PetArmor (found at WalMart) and haven't had any fleas or ticks in the 14 months we've had our dog.

Problem with spray is my DD's can't not pet the dog. Can they pet him if I spray him in the morning and they get home from school around 3-4?

Honestly we just use a flea comb. We have only had fleas a few times in 30 years

I use the Nexgard. It isn't that cost effective but it keeps her flea free and avoids the bigger problems that fleas can cause. It is easy to give her, it is a chewable. Works great.

I usually do it at night when they go to bed and then they don't usually pet the dogs until after school the next day. I've been using it on my dogs since birth and they are now all between 10-13.

subbing b/c 'budget' and 'works' are something I haven't found in one product yet:lmao: Frontline stopped working a few years back...vet told me that it's pretty much kaput now- so I started using advantag- I divide a large dose by size among my small animals- it works pretty well on fleas, but I would like something that is effective against ticks too,as that is our real battle-
those brands found at dept. stores do pretty much nothing IMHO

For dogs, try Advantix II for fleas & ticks.
I see you have cats too. So, it might not be safe to use the Advantix on the dog(s) if they are around the cats.

We use K9 Advantage and Feline Advantage and we have to. We also do a monthly dose of heart guard for our lab. Fleas and ticks here are just nuts. You don't dare take your dog in long grass in the spring/summer around here.

I'm looking to find it cheaper though. It works so I don't want to switch brands but when I go pick up our meds from the vet in the spring (6 months doses of all) it's over $400:crazy2:

I know a lady who used Avon SSS original on her horses to keep bugs/mosquitoes away and to help their coats.

Growing up, we used it on our dogs and rabbits. Didn't have an issue with fleas but not sure about ticks. Their skin was always in great condition.

I grew up in CT and had Lyme disease twice as a kid. SSS is great with repelling ticks. I didn't realize it works on fleas too. Really good idea!

I would never have thought of Avon SSS. My dog absolutely hates frontline. When I had gotten her as a puppy there was one that I used on her (can't remember the exact name - think it was promeris) and it burned her skin. Now when I put anything on her even frontline she freaks out. Definitely traumatized her. I am going to look into the avon.

How interesting! How does one use SSS on a dog? This is a Shih Tzu and can have long hair at times. Do you just massage it into the skin everywhere?
