Has anyone been to these cities? What info can you give to a solo traveler deciding between the 2 for a 24-hr layover? Safety, hotels close to the airports, and proximity of airports to attractions are all things I'm wondering about, plus anything else you can give advice on.

TIA!

I've never been to Brussels, but I've been to Frankfurt. We didn't like it, but it could be because of the area we stayed in. Since we were using Eurail passes, we stayed in a hotel near the train station. There was nothing appealing there at all.

Munich is much nicer than Frankfurt IMHO.

We flew into Brussels once (back in 1997), but we went straight to our friends' home in Antwerp. We did visit the city near the end of our vacation. We visited the Atomium and downtown Brussels (because DS James wanted to see the famous Manneqin Pis statue). The city square was breathtaking. Definitely worth a visit. Since we didn't stay in Brussels, I don't know where you should stay nor do I remember how far it was from the airport to the places that we visited.

You can also visit Waterloo on the outskirts of Brussels (which we skipped because the weather was nasty the day that we arrived).

Thank you two! I had to go ahead and buy a ticket, and all I had to go on were your two replies and a very small amt of internet "research." I couldn't find anything inviting in Frankfurt either (any other city in Germany and I probably would have picked it -- I so wish the airport were closer to Rothenburg). So, Brussels it is! I saw a picture of that city square -- wowzers!

THANK YOU!!!

I know frankfurt like the back of my hand. I lived near there for 3 years. Like any place it has it good spots and bad spots. All of Germany is really beautiful. The mountains, castles, and all the old style buildings are really nice.

Please oh please....take me to Frankfurt!!!! I have been there three times and I cried everytime I had to leave.
I made very good friends there, there's so much to see there, and there's so much chocolateeeeeeee. But I do agree, there are good and bad areas, and BTW, I got stuck in the elevator in the airport, for 45 minutes!!!!
My kids want me to take them to Germany someday, and I want to go back to visit my friends, the funny thing is I have another friend close to Brussels , and I want to go there too!:(

Now, if you two would have posted yesterday, my signature countdown might say Frankfurt right now! If I could have found a nearby castle to visit easily, I would have been there! Just too much info to find out in too little time.

I wish I had friends in Europe! Do you think 11 years is too long to look up my old WDW College Program roomies??? Man, I wish I would have stayed in touch!

Nope, I don't think 11 years is too long! Sounds like you have a great trip planned......and that pic is VERY cool!!!

If I tell you that I lost touch with my friends in Germany for 15 years and just recently I found them online what would you say? and my friend in Brussels, I have been friends with him ( penpals actually ) for 22 years, but believe it or not we have never met, although we have exchanged presents, phone calls and pictures of our families.
