Bruise from bug bite?

I am hoping someone has some experience with this. Monday I was hiking with the kids and I felt a bug bite me. It itched for about a half hour and I noticed it looked like there was a bit of discoloration (bruising) off to one side. It is in an odd space which I don't normally see so I forgot all about it. Tonight DH asked how I got that bruise. Sure enough, right where the bite was is a silver dollar sized bruise with a white spot in the middle (the bite). I have never bruised from a bug bite before. Is this normal for some bites? Should I be worried or seeing a doctor?

Could be a spider bite...I'd get it checked out.

My kids get that from mosquito bites. Spider bites are different. Yes we have had issues with both. Here is what the doctor said- bug bites are very dirty and parasitic. What happens with the mosquito bites is that they get a localized infection. Our son swells up and looks very bruised from them as well. He also used to spend the night throwing up if he got bit by one. Poor kid. Put some afterbite on it and some neosporin or even some benadryll. Benadryll makes the swelling go down.

I bruise and get welps from mosquito bites as well. It is not fun at all. neosporin and benadryl helps.

I think I am slightly allergic to several kinds of bugs--and that is exactly what happens to me. DS seems to have the same problem. I use Benedryl and an anti-itch cream if it bothers me enough. Sometimes it takes a couple weeks for the bite marks to go away. I have the same reaction to bee stings too but it feels more like a sprain than a bruise.

You might want to take a picture of the bite and then get an appointment with your Dr. It could very possibly be a deer tick bite which could then lead to Lyme's Disease. Take the picture in case the bruising goes away before you can get into the dr.

I'd watch out for that bulls eye reaction too...that's definitely from a tick.

I know here in NH where the mosquitos are the size of teradactyl's, that I itch them so hard I bruise myself from scratching at them.

Hope it goes away soon, just watch for any signs of infection.

I would call the doctor and have them check it out, it could be a tick bite....sounds like you have the "bullseye".

Keep an ey on it. My mom got bit and it reacted like that. She ended up with an open wound-doc said she was prabably bit by a recluse spider. Took a couple of months to get it healed up. good luck

Again thanks for all the replies. My doctor is not open on Thursdays which cna be annoying for stuff like this. I would like to call him and just ask about it, but I hate to bother him at home for essnetially a bruise.

Those if you who react like htis to regular mosquito bites: I am sorry you do, but thanks for posting; it keeps me frmo worrying so much.

A question for the people who are mentioning deer ticks: I always thought that the tick had to embed for about 24 hours to transmit the disease (why I do tick checks on the kids every night in "outdoor" times of year). I FELT whatever it was bite me, brushed at it and immediately looked at my skin as the "bump" was still rising. Now this bruise is here. I am not even sure a tick can bite that quickly. Any comment there?

To the person who said take a photo: good idea. Now I just have to find batteries for the camera I tink they are all in DD's Mindstorms.

Deer ticks are VERY small, you won't see them with a 'check'. The wood ticks, the brown/red ones you normally see don't carry Lyme. The deer ticks are about the size of a grain of sand.

Thank you. I knew they wer esmall but not THAT small. I always thought they were "freckle sized" Oh well--it is still good to check for the bigger ones and I guess the rash

I did just speak to my neighbor. Both she and her DD have been bruising from the black fly bites this spring--so maybe that is it. I will still call the doctor in the monring--but thanks to you all who have made me feel like I do not need to rush off to urgent care or semething! Oh, and I did rescue the batteries from the robot and get a few photos in case I need them.
