Is there anywhere you can buy the Grapefruit cake from the Brown Derby without having reservations at the restaurant? I don't think we can squeeze a reservation in on our upcoming October trip, but would like to try the cake.

You can try the Patio Lounge which opens at noon and is first-come, first-served, with a menu of small plates, desserts, and cocktails. It located to the right of the main entrance to the restaurant.

I scored a piece of grapefruit cake from Starring Rolls (their kitchens are connected, I believe). They don't have it in their case, but I had read that if you ask nicely (which I did), they will disappear into the back and find one for you. It took a while, but she reappeared with a piece. It was $7, and a snack credit could NOT be used, but it was worth it. SO GOOD.

The BD Lounge actually has a great little menu if you want to chill out for a while. The slider duo includes one of the best little burgers on property, in my opinion anyway. Between that, a slab of cake and, with the right timing, some live music nearby, it's a nice break. Of course, scoring the cake from Starring Rolls would also be a good option -- I had no idea you could do that. Just remember that they close mid-afternoon, so don't let the time slip up on you if that is the first plan.
