Finally figured out where my rash is coming from...my new rayon shirts.

Ever happened to anyone? Going to store tomorrow to find something to help the itching.

Did it happen even after you washed them?

Rayon, in some percentage, is in everything so I would be surprised that this is the first time you've noticed it. You've never, ever worn rayon before?

Rayon is a fibre made from processing wood pulp (cellulose) with chemicals. You likely noticed a very strong chemical smell when you took the garments out of bag. That's likely what is causing your reaction and a lot of 100% rayon items don't tolerate washing well and must be dry-cleaned, introducing even more chemicals. Rayon may not be for you if you have sensitivities.

Agree that rayon is synthetic and cause sensitivities. I only made my comment because the OP commented that the clothes were brand new. Sometimes it's the fabric treatments that cause people problems rather than the garment itself.

Rayon is weird in that the fabric IS basically the chemicals it's made from, which is why the more it's washed and the chemicals are purged, the weaker, softer and more shapeless it becomes. It's a nice looking fabric when new, but it doesn't really hold up very well. They're making "organic" rayon out of bamboo pulp now (still has all the chemicals though) and that stuff is so "undurable" (if that is even a word) that my DH walked the bottom off a pair of socks the first wearing.

I wear mostly cotton and I recently brought four new shirts (rayon). I'm going to stop wearing them and see what happens.

Thank you, everyone!!

I'm allergic to silk. I've tried and tried over the years to wear it and it's the same allergic reaction. I think I'll google that now to see how common it is...lol.

Once bought new crayons - Allergic to crayons

feel your pain

You never know where or when you're going to develop an allergy to something - even if it's something you've worn before. I had an angora sweater when I was younger and wore it with no problem. I just found out I'm highly allergic to angora - at least the living breathing hopping kind. I don't think I'll ever touch angora (the rabbits or the sweaters) again. Good luck OP - it's going to be tough on the rayon front if you are truly allergic to it. so much is made out of rayon anymore. At least with angora I only have to watch out with winter clothes.
