Brother's heart bypass UPDATE

Brother made it through the surgery. He was suppose to be having his bypass from 10-4 (we were told 6hrs). At 6pm the heart surgeon came out to talk to us. Said brother made it through surgery but it was more difficult than anticipated.
He had been getting shots in his belly for the wk prior to surgery to take off water buildup. Once he was opened up he got pulmonary edema.
There is currently a ballon going from his leg up into his heart to help pump his heart.
The doc was able to unblock 2 of the 3 arteries - the 2 that were 100% blocked. The 3rd is hidden inside the heart and will need angioplasty at a later date.
Doc said brother had hardening of the arteries for quite a while which lead up to his massive heart attack.
Doc thinks he may be in CSU for a week before moving to rehab.
I have the # at CSU and will call in a while to see how his night went.

They will try to take the breathing tube out today. Not sure when the tube that goes into the heart to help pump it will come out.

younger brother just called - said he and my mother had just been up to see older brother
The breathing tube is out! Im feeling more relieved. Said brother is cooperative. The hospital staff will begin to wean him off the heart pump gradually. He's getting there - thanks everyone for the support. It does help to have a place to vent.

I'm glad your brother is doing OK! Don't worry that the chest tube doesn't come out right away, the shock of the surgery is a lot for the body and there will be a lot of draining to be done, but it shouldn't take TOO long. The great thing that he is breathing on his own again! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
