the cough med my dr. prescribed! THey are calling him for a susbstitute, but one pharm. said what he prescribed is the best. Great, then why not carry it??? He said he could have it for me on TUESDAY...lovely, I am coughing up a lung NOW.

Hang in there. I used to get bronchitis a lot in the 90's. Haven't had it since.

I am so sorry you have that. I got it for the first time the second week of November and didn't get rid of it until right before Christmas. It was HORRIBLE.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Have you tried some Mucinex DM? It helped me clear my lungs out - didn't stop the coughing much - but did help with loosening it up and helping my coughs be productive.

Good luck with it.

Couple tips for you...

1st, an over the counter cough medicine will work, get one with guaifenesin- Robittussin has that- that loosens the secretions in your lungs.

dextromethorphan- Vicks 44 has this- will supress the cough, you have to do really both

You do not want violent coughing attacks- because that will irritate your lungs even more- but you want to still cough enough to remove the mucus you have just 'broken' up

More than likely the cough medicine you were prescribed has some sort of prescription strength cough suppressent- and I'm going to guess codeine too..?? Take tylenol too while you wait..

Brandy

I get bronchitis every year. In fact, I may have it now. I never get a prescription cough syrup, though... I do Vicks44D with the antibiotics. It works for me.

Good luck getting your meds!

What is the name of this wonderful cough med, that the pharm. doesn't stock? Good luck with your bronchitis, mine took 2 to 3 weeks to pass, of course I had it for awhile before I went to the Dr.

I've had bronchitis a few times, once REALLY bad. A kind nurse took pity on me and gave me the best medical advice I've ever received.

Water. Plain old tap water. TONS of it. Drink it like a fish, constantly. It's the very best expectorant in the world. Within hours of drinking TONS of water, I was feeling things loosen up.

Do it. I'm telling you, it works like magic. :wizard:

I've found that Tussionex is the best whenever I get a killer cough. It has a narcotic (hydrocodone) in it and it does the job quite nicely!

Feel better soon!

is it promethazine (phenergan) with codeine?

my doc prescribed that to me...it made NO sense

phenergan is a motion sickness/anit nausea med that CAN knock you out, paired with codiene...oye...i hope you have time to sleep LOL

She did say in the other thread that she need some sleep...the phenergan and codien would take care of that. Until you get the script, take some nice steamy showers/baths and have someone "pound" your back to keep things moving and not settling into your lungs(pnumonia).

I get bronchitis several times a year, and I rarely fill the prescriptions I get for cough medicine as I have found that Robitussin DM works just as well for me. You could give that a try, at least till your pharmacy has the prescribed medicine in stock.

Phenergan is used as an antihistimine to help with the possible side effects of the codien/nausea, itching....

I have to agree with this, I found that taking the hot steamy showers and then someone pounding on my back really loosened that stuff up. It is horrible I once dealt with it for almost a month, I still get it periodically and all I can say is trying to cough that stuff out is terrible, my back hurt, my head hurt! The water too does help so it isn't so icky, mine was green and sticky.....sorry to be gross but those that have bronchitis will know exactly what I am saying. Get better soon, perhaps call your dr. and ask for a substitution until the pharmacies can get you what you need.

It is an h1 receptor antagonist which helps with allergic reactions and nausea...for whatever reason, it also thins secretions. It's becoming more popular for bronchitis. It didn't work for me at all though.

Thanks all. OTC cough stuff never helps me when I have bronchitis. Dr. gave me guafenesin with codeine. I had to TELL CVS to call other CVS's to find it and they finally did. At least I can sleep now. Still coughing up some lovely stuff. Also take 2 puffs of my Asmanex instead of 1.

Forgot to add that I had such a bad attack on the way home from work (on the bus) that I got off early and had my niece come get me. I was mortified.

Glad you got the night time cough med, you should ask your Dr about something you can take during the day. I was given a med called Tesselon Perels(the generic is Benzonatate), it worked much better than OTC meds during the day. Feel better soon.

I'd also like to suggest a warm mist humidifier this time of year. Drier air irritates the lungs and makes things worse.
