We bought a new iPad (3rd generation) since our iPad2 screen is cracked in the corner. Yes, kids dropping them is not good for them-imagine that....

But I've started thinking maybe I can get the screen fixed and let the kids have that one. The nearest Apple store is about 100 miles from here. Any idea if it is worth it to take it there to see if they can replace the screen? Or take it to Best Buy? MY new iPad came today that I ordered online from Apple, btw.

Any recommendations or suggestions?

i cracked the screen on my IPad 1st generation. I took it to the Apple Store and asked about a repair and THEY GAVE ME A NEW ONE!!!!

Now when I just went into the store a few weeks ago and bought the Gen 3 IPad, I mentioned this to the clerk who informed me that they are no longer allowed to do that. You may want to try you local store to see what they would do for you. You can buy a screen online and install it yourself, but I'm not sure of my manual dexterity for such a delicate operation:confused3

Is Best Buy closer? I would check with them on replacement cost. Call Apple and ask them. Check on line. There are a lot of places that will fix it now. I would also suggest you buy AppleCarePlus for the new one. Good luck

Apple doesn't do this any more. I also had one replaced, but the replacement has a crack now. I still use it. The crack has not caused the iPad to not work.

How bad is the crack? I would just let the kids use it until it stops working.
I had an original iPhone that was dropped and cracked after about 1 year. When I finally upgraded it and gave it to my DS to use as an iPod.

I STRONGLY recommend Otterbox for your case on your new one.

I have an iPad2 and once it got a ding on the metal part and immediately I bought an Otterbox. I have dropped it more than once with NO damage. I love it!

There are 2 Otterboxes for the iPad. The reflex and the defender. I didn't need the defender (which claims you can't get sand or dirt in it but is also heavier and bulkier) so I got the reflex.

The crack wasn't too bad- AT FIRST. Now, it has seriously cracked in the corner and some pieces of glass have come out. It still works, but I don't want little pieces of glass coming out and becoming dangerous. But it still works and DS loves it, so I really hate to get rid of it. The smartcover provides no protection if dropped, unfortunately.

We will definitely be getting something better for the new one. I'll check out the Otterbox. I have a switcheasy on my iPhone and I dropped it in the dogs' waterbowl one night. I pulled it out right away and no damage whatsoever. Switcheasy has a website with some cool iPhone and iPad cases that I'm going to look at also...

I had a friend whose iPod Touch screen cracked and she sent it off to get it replaced by someone on ebay for $25. Well worth it! I would think they could do iPads too!

We have a GUMDROP case for ours. It is the best! My daughter has dropped ours many many times. No damage. This case is indestructible. And it looks cool- like a red and black rugged truck tire.

I have heard of people putting their broken iPad's through home owners ins. I won't do it, but some have.

Good luck.

Tell me about Switcheasy. Is ti suppose to protect from water? Which one did you buy?

DH and I each bought cases for iPhones from switcheasy.com. We have the CapsuleRebel M (we each still have iPhone 3GS- but will get upgrades in a few months when Apple releases the new iPhones). I don't know if they are SUPPOSED to protect from water, but mine sure did. When I dropped it in the water bowl, it was FLOATING and scared me to death. I got it out as fast as I could, but was still concerned. DH has dropped his many times and no damage to the phone. We both get compliments on how cool our cases look from fellow geeks, lol. I would highly recommend them. They have cases for all kinds of Apple products.

When we needed to replace a battery on an older iPod, I got one from milliamp.com. They also do screen replacements, etc. We got our battery from them and replaced it ourself, but you can also mail in your items and they'll repair and return -- prices seemed very reasonable, and we were very happy with the result.

ETA: I just checked out the price to do this -- $169!!!! and $13 if you want them to do it rather than send you the piece for you to do! Sorry. Don't know how that compares with anyone else, though -- that might be the going rate.

The iPad Otterbox case will not protect it from water but it will protect it in the event of dropping. I often put my iPad in the hands of a <gulp> three-year-old. A company called Lifeproof makes a water-proof case for the iPhone and have said that they will be making an iPad version soon.

We have a cell phone repair shop in town that replaces cracked ipad screens...It's $100, but cheaper than driving to an apple store...check with any cell phone repair shops in your town

Since it's not working now anyway, I'd try getting a replacement kit on eBay. Most are less than $40 and come with the tools and directions on how to replace the screen. It really isn't difficult to do at all.

They are actually not that hard to replace yourself. I have replaced the digitizer and glass on a number of smart devices. Google it first and see if it is something you think you can do. It will be much cheaper and kind of fun.
