Broken hinge on Nintendo DS Lite

The title says it all. Dd broke the hinge on the case of the Nintendo. Has anyone here had the same problem? What did you do? If you sent it to Nintendo for repair, how long was it gone, and what did they charge? Thanks.

My son has had two hinges break on two different DSs, he's on his third one. Each one has lasted about a year, maybe a bit more. We bought the replacement plan offered by the store ($15) so we got a new one each time. The first time we didn't have to send the DS back but the second time we had to return it to get the check.

We called Nintendo about it but they were NOT helpful at all. I think we could pay $70 (I may be wrong about the amount) and they would repair it, no thanks.

My son isn't hard on his DS in any way, he may close it too fast but other than that he's pretty careful with it. He even uses the Nerf cover 100% of the time.

depends on how it broke. if it broke on its own. Nintendo has a past record of repairing them for free.

We had a broken hinge on our DS. My son was trying to take the Nerf case off and broke the hinge. Nintendo fixed it no problem. It was gone about a week.

If it is within warranty they will repair it for free, and you get it back pretty quickly.

Otherwise they charge 75.00 and you still get it back pretty quick.

My DD broke hers and we bought a Hannah Montana protective DS case at Target. It is kind of like the Nerf ones but is made of hard plastic and is lined with rubber. It is hinged like the DS and holds it together perfectly and it only cost $10

Thanks y'all. Dd is fairly careful with it. I'll look into the protective cover, but I guess we'll have to send it back to them for repair. Kind of seems like a ripoff. I understand if dd dropped it, etc and caused the damage, but she's been pretty careful with it.

"Santa" bought my DS's DS (lol) at Costco, so when the hinge broke over February vacation, I brought it back to Costco with the reciept and the box, and they took it back and gave me cash because they were not selling them any more at the time. I went right to TRU and bought another one. Another reason why Costco rocks.

We've had a couple of repair issues of our own fault. Nintendo can be bargined with. I just said I couldn't afford the first price quote and it ended up being half of the original quote. Give it a try Sent it back really quick too

Nintendo is excellent on thier repairs. They still have repair parts for thier much much older systems that you can order.
Thier warrenty has always been 1 year from date of purchase, unlike the other's at only 90 days. If it's user caused, well it's in your hands. But I guess it all depends on who's on the other end that's determining if it could be the fault of the product.
If you want to save yourself the hassle, buy yourself the product protection, which covers for users fault (in some store, read the fine print). Just remember if you do purchase the protection, you have to buy a new protection for the new unit. The first one will only cover the product it's registered to. But all you do is take it back to the store you bought it from and they'll hand over a new one.

It never occurred to me to bargain with them (darn it!) but I just sent one of ours in last month because the kids broke it. The hinge broke so bad that you couldn't turn the thing on. They had quoted us $75 (plus $10 shipping both ways) and told us that whether they repaired it or replaced it, it would be the same $85. They ended up sending us a new one. Yay! I had it back within 2 weeks, so they must have shipped out just about the day they got it, because I imagine it was in transit for 75% of that time!
