Yes, I broke my 50d at Disney 2 weeks ago- but I still had the best time! Would I take my camera again? Absolutely!

The irony is that I took my camera everywhere- Everest, Splash Mountain, etc- and I had my camera out 95% of the time. It was actually a trip to the bathroom that did it in! I had it well protected in my lowepro slingshot and hung it on the hook in the bathroom stall and the bag dropped off the hook! I didn't think much of it but when I took my camera out again, I found that something had dislodged and the mirror wouldn't lift up so I couldn't take any pictures. I was surprised that a fall in a well padded bag could lead to this but...it was Star Wars Weekend so personally, I'm blaming Vader and his Jedi Mind Tricks :)

The silver lining is that it was at the end of my trip so I had already taken many many pictures and also- it was three weeks before my 1 year warranty was up so it is being fixed with no charge! I actually had a great experience with Canon- I shipped it out to them less than a week ago and Fed Ex is due to drop the repaired camera back at my house today!

If I get my act together, I'm going to post a trip report with some pictures. My pictures are not nearly in the same category as some people on this board but I have learned so much in the last year, especially from the people here, that my photography is light years ahead of where it was during my Disney trip 1 year ago. Thanks! And another silver lining- I upgraded to an annual pass when we were down there so I'll be back in August!

Sorry to hear about your mishap! Glad to hear everything will turn out OK. Did you have any extra lenses in the bag? Was anything else damaged?

I'm planning to take my new bright red Pentax DSLR on its first ever Disney trip in a couple months. It should be fun! Its just so dang big. Not sure if I'm going to regret it. I'm one of those people who travels light, and this will be an all new experience for me. Never know till you try.

OMG So sorry for you loss. I think of my D50 as my 3rd child. Thanks goodness for you silver lining. Would still love to see you SWW photos. We went in 08 and had a ball.

opps hit enter too quickly... For my last Disney trip I bought a Holster type bag. I now carry my camera everywhere. It is the best money I ever spent. It goes across your chest and hangs and you side. I can put base and two lenses. I also have extra battery and cards, manual, plastic ziploc (extra large). It also has a little pouch where I can put my money and cards. It is the only thing I carry at the parks. The part I like about the bag is that while I am walking I can unzip the bag take the camera out and take a photo and place back in and zip up again. Here is the bag

I did get my camera back yesterday and it is as good as new. Apparently, something disconnected between the power source and the mirror so the mirror wasn't able to lift up. It was covered under the warranty so that's exciting. Lenses seem to be working fine, too.

As far as bag choices and traveling light- I wish I could travel light but it never works out for me. I got a locker every day and that was a great decision. I ended up carrying my 2.8 24-70 and my 1.4 50mm most of the time. I would have loved to use my 70-200 more but I found it was too heavy for me to carry both the 24-70 and the 70-200 so the 70-200 got left behind a lot. My plan is to sell my 50 mm and replace it with a 30 mm 1.4- I think that since I have a crop sensor camera, I will use the 30 mm a little more than the 50. We'll see- can't wait to go back in August!

That is GREAT news! I have some good news to share. I have the Nikon D50 and got a great deal yesterday on a D90. So I have to start using the D90 before my trip and get comfortable with it.
