Broadway on a Budget

I'm going to NYC next week for a conference. I would like to buy a ticket to a Broadway show - on a budget!! Last time DH & I went to New York, I stood in line at the TKTS booth and got decent seats to The Birdcage with Kelsey Grammar. But this time I will be in conferences all day and won't have time to stand in line.

I did a search here on the DIS and found out about Broadwaybox.com. In looking at the options I am thinking about these two shows. Which would you pick??l


Mary Poppins $49 + fees
Jesus Christ Superstar $59 + fees

I'd like Mary Poppins because I am a Disney fan. But read lukewarm reviews. I'd like to see JCS because I think it is a classic that I have never seen. (I've seen other classics like Phantom, Wicked, etc.)

Or are there other options you recommend??? I'm not really picky. And it is just me.

That is a good deal for Mary poppins, depending on where the seats are. I thought the show was great!

Unless you have a valid college student ID, you're looking for listings for:
"General Rush" Line up the morning of the show.
"Lottery" Generally drawn 2ish hours before the show.
"SRO" Standing Room Only tickets.

There is also the TKTS booth in Times Square that sells same day, half-price tickets to a number of shows. For evening performances, they begin selling at 3PM and end approximately 15 minutes to curtain.

My normal plan is to go for either a general rush or lottery ticket. If I fail to win the lottery, then I head to the TKTS booth.

Given your time constraints -- I would consider trying the lottery if you can find the time to pop over to the theater 2 hours ahead.

If you're looking for recommendations, I'd be happy to oblige. I'm a HUGE theater nerd!

I might be able to TKTS if they start at 3 pm. I believe on Friday they are letting us have the afternoon free after lunch.

I'm also up for any recommendations. I'd like something in the $60 and under range. I'm ok with boutique-y type shows. It doesn't have to be huge Broadway show.

I would look for deals on Broadwaybox or theatermania that fit your price range. If you find something then buy it. If not, then take your chances with the TKTS booth. We've had good luck just kind of showing up in the late afternoon and buying whatever was a great deal. In London, several years ago, we saw We Are The Champions this way and it's still one of my DH's favorite shows.

If you not seen either show you can't go wrong with either JCS or Mary poppins. I would suggest printing out the deals and bringing them to the box office when you are in NYC. You will save fees and can have a little more control over where you sit.

Another show I would recommend is godspell. The cast is incredible.

I would happily see JCS, Mary Poppins, or Godspell! I saw JCS in the national tour in the 1990s and it was awesome. So for me, personally, I'd go for Mary Poppins because it's new to me. Those prices are awesome for both JCS and Mary Poppins. I can't get tickets to any touring shows in New England for that price!

Oh, Jim Parsons (Sheldon on Big Bang Theory) is in Harvey on Broadway right now. It's not a musical, but it's a fun play. I saw a local production last year.

Tickets are realeased at TKTS all the way up to showtime. I have a client near Times Square and sometimes I will pop over to TKTS between 6 and 7 have been able to pick up a single ticket at a good price.

I saw Mary Poppins like this last summer on a Thursday evening and the theater was still half empty at curtain time. I got an orchestra seat for $66 with all fees.

I've seen both musicals. I love Mary Poppins on TV, but felt the musical was really boring. In fact, my husband and I left during intermission, which we NEVER do.

Jesus Christ Superstar was a great musical, though I'm a huge Andrew Lloyd Webber Fan.

Sorry I can't help with cheap tickets.

I've done 3 Broadway shows via lottery. 25 bucks cash for an amazing seat each time. Highly recommend figuring out where the lotteries are.
