British Observation...

Most of the time we don't tan, but please don't think our fashion sense is limited to football shorts. I am not aware of people going commando in football shorts. Seems odd, and probably a one-off or as close-to! Overall we folks over here are probably more fashion-conscious than folks in the US. Not an unkind generalisation but I think we just get more trendy styles overall.

It's difficult to describe how you can tell, but in Europe (most of the time) you just can. Obviously we have many languages in Europe which helps!

Usually only if we visit European capital cities to we meet US citizens.

Excuse the detour, but your comment reminded me of something that happened to me when I was a teenager.

I grew up in England, living there from 72-83, a little village called Oxshott in Surrey. One year I got a brand new ski jacket, almost all white with a red and blue horizantal stripe. Snazzy as we would say, 'flash' to the English. :thumbsup2

So I'm in an underground station waiting on a tube and this guy comes up and in a friendly conversational tone says, "Yank, are ya?"

I smiled and said yes. I had attended an English prep school and had lived there for 5 years and I took pride in fitting in and NOT being spotted as an American tourist. (And yes we do stand out a MILE over there.)

So I had to ask how he knew? Oh well, he said, it's the jacket isn't it?

But, I replied indignantly, I bought this at C&A! (An English department store.)

He laughed and replied, Yeah! But only a yank would buy it! :lmao: We both laughed at that and it's one of my favorite stories about spotting Americans in London.

How come I always miss the good stuff. Never see any young men with see thru clothing or the well endowed (male) Brazilian's who undress in public at the water parks (some other woman had that experience!) ... all I see is slightly older men in regular bathing suits in public ... wait that's my DH ... and he is still cute ... but definately not wearing see thru clothing in public ... :lmao:

Honestly, maybe they don't realize what happens in the rain??? Until it happens you wouldn't think shorts would be see thru ... would you?

Okay, this is somewhat OT, but have you brits ever noticed how most Americans are COMPLETE anglophiles? Speak with an English accent (or heaven help us Scottish or Irish) and we melt into a giant puddle of goo. Rather funny, really. I work at a school and we had a volunteer who was working over here as a nanny (Londoner). She was a nice girl, but somewhat on the plain side. All of our 6th graders had crushes on her. "Kirstie, say something for us..." :lmao:

Well, I'd much rather see some young British guys in see-through white shorts than what I saw at the POFQ pool last year. A rather large woman, wearing a bathing suit was climbing up the ladder out of the pool. Unfortunately, she had made absolutely no effort to shave her bikini line. And what a bikini area it was!!!!

Needless to say, my DBIL and I needed a good poolside margarita after that! (We were the only two who saw, thank goodness!)

Gross Gross and Gross.

I don't know, but years ago at a Disnye resort pool, Dsis and I got an eyeful from a heavy-set man in a peach see-thru Speedo. He had much hair on his backside, and it kind of crept up thru the top of the back of his Speedo, like a fat, black caterpillar. We left the pool area before we had a chance to see the front view.

 Eew, I think that I just threw up a little in my mouth.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
YOur comment made me laugh so hard that I peed my pants a little. :rotfl2:
Going to give you all the real British thrill now!
Now close your eyes, imagine my best Mary Poppins accent and repeat after me:

"Jolly hockey sticks you Americans are such silly billys - what a childish thing to say!" :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I'm off now to have my first of ten spray tans before my visit in 15 days, must remember to cross those see-through white shorts off my packing list and go out and buy a fanny pack and some tassled cowboy boots- don't want to stand out in the crowd! :lmao: :lmao:
Must repeat 20 times a day "You're good to go"...... then I'm "good to go".

Have fun everyone, doesn't everybody's little differences make life a little bit more fun!

I'm surprised at people wearing football shorts commando mind.

I certainly wouldn't, but then again the lack of pockets in football shorts means i don't wear them and prefer cargo shorts with lots of pockets instead.

I agree you can usually tell the difference between Americans and English people due to their clothes/shoes. Its usually the trainers that are a dead giveaway, with Americans tending to wear big chunky trainers whereas we tend to wear trainers that are less chunky and can be worn well with jeans as well as shorts.

Some very popular brand names are also either US or UK exclusive eg Old Navy is most definately US only and NEXT is definately UK only.

The only thing that gets on my nerves is people mistaking my accent for either Scottish or more usually Irish. I am neither, i am English.

Well this thread proves it, the USA is saner than the UK. The current British political correctness police would never let anyone reply to this thread with an ounce of humour. (Don't you know you're not meant to notice any difference in people of different cultures...............LOL)

anyway, that wasn't a load of Brits in see through shorts it was Posh's new way of getting David Beckham a bit of free US publicity.

You are? I thought men took any opportunity to do without! ;)

But, all things considered, we Americans do very much like Brits! :sunny:
See you at the Rose & Crown! :drinking1

We experienced something like this several years ago at Blizzard Beach. A perhaps 12 year old british boy dropped his drawers to change into his swim trunks right in the locker area and was butt naked for a good few minutes before getting himself dressed. Now this wasn't the enclosed bathroom area...this was the lockers right out in the open where everyone could see. We were pretty shocked and I have to say his PARENTS should have been scolded bery harshly for that one.

I think most people can spot an English accent. :)

You would think. I've been assumed to be Irish, Australian, New Zealand and South African. Mind you an entire classroom thought I was French once, and that was in UK!! I got it more so on the west coast than here on the east coast. I just get the "I love your accent" here in MD. Which used to make me squirm horribly with embarassment, but I've gotten used to it now.

As for those lovely England shorts, DH would NEVER wear a soccer top to Disney. He does wear them at the weekend at home. I would draw the line at the shorts though. The material is pretty flimsy, so I can see how water would reveal all. Saying that I have vivid memories of a few yummy soccer players in UK when they got all hot and sweaty.... You don't have to be commando for those shorts to give it all away, in my experience. Sorry probably a bit too much info.......I'm scurrying off to see if the soccer channel has any matches on.....
