British holidays. Whats the point?

We're off to Florida in Feb '05 for 2 weeks in a villa off highway 27 - about a 20 minute car journey from WDW. Two weeks for the villa is costing me < £500. My wife was looking at booking us a week in Wales towards the end of the summer holidays next year. To fit all 5 of us into a cottage (I dislike caravans with a passion) is going to cost at least £800.

Now I know that I probably shouldn't but I just can't balance two weeks in a sunny climate in a huge villa with a pool on a gated & secure complex for less than £500 - against - one week in Wales when it'll probably rain in a shabby cottage for £800.

Granted I'd still have to pay air fare, car, theme tickets and spending money in the US but, oh, I dunno. Why do British holidays have to be so expensive? I was looking forward to a trip to Wales as I love the country and the people but I'm not going to be fleeced for a week. If I'm paying more than £100 a day to stay somewhere, I want something spectacular!

I can see what you are saying. There are loads of lovely places in the UK I would love to see but I can't because of my Disney obsession LOL :)

I hear ya - personally I love Devon and Cornwall but the place costs a fortune to stay at when the weather is even part way decent - so for me there is no contest...rather sad though, isn't it? :(

We take lots of hols in the Uk as well as our annual WDw fix... I don't feel they compete, more that they complement each other... and it doesn't have to be expensive.. we camp!:teeth:

I agree. Several times we have thought about doing a week in the UK before or after a Florida trip and nearly everytime, it has worked out cheaper to go abroad. DH is mad about boats, so for his birthday next year in May, I was looking to book a weeks boating holiday on the Norfolk Broads. 1 week, self catering in a modest vessel is over £800!!! We have done 2 weeks in Florida for barely more than that! Its ridiculous!

4 nights in Dublin earlier this year (not exactly UK, but close enough) came in at £800 and I had won the flights and 2 nights hotel accomodation! That was just car hire, 1 nights hotel and food costs. Silly prices.

I know what you mean but like Mike says I see them as complimentary. One of my favourite holidays was a week spent in a little cottage near to Sherwood Forest. This was about £350 at May half term but at the time to go abroad was absolutely out of the question financially, and I would have rather had my little holiday in my cottage than no holiday at all.

Now, don't get me on the subject of the cost of holidays to the Med.... I could be here all night ;) Way over priced in comparison with Florida!

I'm happy I'm not alone in feeling that British holidays are somewhat expensive. It hasn't diminished my desire to visit but it does mean I need to save longer before my trip. But I will see Cornwall someday. . .

Me and Dh are having this dilema right now. We are on a budget (saving up for Florida yet again :goodvibes ) but want to do something this summer, and unfortunately for blighty, it looks like it will be cheaper to jump on a plane somewhere. It is a shame because we've got a lot to be proud of right here, just not the price!!

We've had some enforced UK holidays, due to DH's health, over the years and they work out so expensive if the weather is poor :confused3

Just going as a couple seems 'doable', but add a child, or two, into the equation and it can get quite scarey :scared1:

Find a 'cheapy' holiday abroad, incorporate DH's duty free, add a splash of sunshine for DD and myself, give DD a pool to spend hours in, me a book or two and we're laughing.... :thumbsup2

Guys, Please just be aware that this is a very old thread (15 months old) that has been bumped up again today. Although Im sure the topic of the thread remains the same, prices quoted on old posts may well have changed either higher or lower since then. Just to make you aware. :goodvibes

The prices still scare me............ ;) :rotfl:

Our family have gone camping for year on year and have been going to the same places like Aberdaron and Betws-y-Coed for over 40 years. Over the last few years the prices for camping aswell as other accomodation has jumped beyond comprehension. We are looking at £18/20 a night to book a pitch with a tent with electric hook up and shower facilities for that price, and the site i am quoting can take a 100 tents easily.

A couple of years ago they were trumpeting the UK holiday as being back but the way things are going it wont be long before this changes. British tourism always seems to have one aim in mind, to skin as much cash out of people in a short space of time. I will be back off to visit the in laws in Spain next year as i am sick of it.

We have a timeshare that is linked to RCI points and we have just booked a week for July 2007 for 3/4 of the points for our unit in florida but the normal price on their web site for the 2 bed 2 bath unit is £685 for 1 week this year!
This makes timeshare a very useful tool when you can plan your holiday far enough in advance and I know all of us Diser's Love PLANNING :thumbsup2

I agree that it is so expensive to have a 'main' holiday in the UK. We love the beach and the sun, and unfortunately the British weather could never provide us with the assurance of at least some sun - and then as everyone knows, the amount of money you spend on a holiday in this country is huge, especially if you haven't got the weather.

There really are some beautiful places, like Cornwall and West Wales, but we tend to just take weekend breaks there. I think until the Tourist Board can start bribing the weather gods, they will always be up against it. It's a shame, but when you take into account the costs and the weather, the majority of us will be flying far away.
