Brita Water Pitcher?

New Owner's Locker owner here! I have a water purifier built in at home and want to get a Brita for storing in my locker at Disney. My question is: How long does it take to purify the water when you refill it? I checked the website and didn't see that particular answer.

I did email them to ask about storage/disposal of the filter itself- hate to toss after one week but checking that out for safety reasons.

Hey, we have had a brita water pitcher and it takes about 5 minutes for the holding water to work it's way down through the filter and into the pitcher.

The pitcher holds 10 8-0z cups of water.

I never loved it b/c the little charcoal bits from the purifying unit drain through with the water, and you wind up with little black bits floating around in your water. It was a major pet peeve of mine that didn't bother my DH in the slightest.

I just don't know if those bits are safe to drink. They actually become more concentrated as you get to the bottom of the pitcher....because they tend to settle on the bottom. So the first few cups of water don't have any bits and then the last few are loaded with them.

Does anybody else find this irritating and/or worrisome? Has anybody ever checked out whether these bits are safe for consumption?

I got rid of my Brita but am considering OL as well, and figured I would put one in there.

To those who have done this: Does the Brita kill that awful "Florida Water" taste (no flames please, but I can't drink FL tap water at all and usually buy bottled water to drink-which they are now saying is dangerous b/c of the bpc's)

I have the brita water filter pitcher and love it. It just take maybe 10-15min for it to filter through. It takes two fillings of the reservoir to fill it completely. I have used the same filter for 4 trips over 2 years. I take it out wrap it in a paper towel and store it in a zip lock. I make my ice and water bottles with it. I think next trip I will replace the filter. It is worth it to not have the Florida water taste.

You must have a bad filter, I have one at home and in my OL and never have bits in my water. Yes, it does kill the Florida water taste.

That's so weird, b/c it's happened to us with several different filters, but I think they were all from the same pack, so maybe it was a defective lot. We used the pitcher for awhile before I gave up and ditched it.

Hhhmmm...is it possible you never noticed the bits? They are very tiny.

Good to know that the FL water taste improves with the pitcher use. Guess I'll have to give it another go.

Good to know! The Florida water gets us too and I hate to use bottled water (environment,plastic) so the Brita seems to be perfect for our DVC stays. We are going to be storing a Keurig coffeemaker and want to use filtered water for the Kcups and for drinking.

Wow the Keurig is such a great idea to store. Wow. This OL idea is getting better by the minute

Now if only I could get my DH onboard with spending $150 for the convenience of it. He is the first one to holler at me for over-packing but the first one to holler at me for wanting to alleviate the problem by spending some money

I read on the OL website that someone can store the mini Keurig in the locker standing up; we got the next size (B-40 or Elite) and plan to store it on its side. I'm going to ship it down UPS- I convinced DH we would save in the long run by actually enjoying our coffee while on vacation and just take our favorite Kcups with us each trip.

I've noticed the particles floating in the reservoir, like they've backwashed out of the filter, but I've never had them actually come through the filter before.

Cool idea, I would have to get a second OL to fit one and buy a Keurig. I just bring some fresh ground beans and call it good.

Well, if the keurig mini fits in the locker standing up, that would be the way to go IMO....we love our keurig so easy to not have to mess with the grinding and filters and clean-up.

Yes, I sometimes get the little bits in the top part of the pitcher, but never have they been in the filtered water.

Nu2dvc either had a bad batch of filters or the filters were not seated properly. You could also have a problem if you do not soak a new filter for 10-15 minutes before using it for the first time.

I use the Brita pitcher at work so that our coffee tastes better. Water there is potable, but tastes funny to me. I am used to well water.

I was going to get the mini but changed to the Elite after I read some reviews on it- the water reservoir holds only one 8 ounce cup worth at a time and the next size up held 48 ounces. We usually each drink 2-3 cups in the morning and have company part of the time so we are gambling on a good fit on it side and filling in around it (with beach towels under). It measures 13 inches high and 10" wide X 13.25 deep and only cost 10 dollars more than the mini. and offers 2 brew sizes- 8 and 10 ounce. Gee, can you tell I put too much research into a vacation coffee machine?

Oh, so I'm sticking to my own thread- thus the need for filtered water! After all this, I sure want it to taste good!

You sound like me when I decide to do something, I research it to death. Kind of like beating a dead horse, but fun nevertheless.

We toss the Brita filter after each trip. I suppose locking it in a zip-lock would be safe enough, but I didn't want to risk invisible mold inside the filter.

I've used Brita for 15 years. I'll quite often get little black spots in the reservoir near the start and end of the filter's life, but rarely in the filtered portion of the pitcher.

I've not found that it takes out the taste of the Florida water. It may reduce it, but I still taste the sulfur quite significantly.

New OL user and shipped down pitcher before trip and it cracked. Went to Wal-Mart and bought the basic Brita pitcher. It is wonderful - got rid of the yucky Florida water taste. Fits perfectly in the OL, I just dried the filter the nite before we left and plan on using it again in 2 months. I had a few black specs in the top part of the pitcher but nothing in the filtered water.

I got an email from BritaI'm still getting one, just will dispose of the filter at the end of our trip- I don't need one at home or would bring it home in a ziplock).

I do not recommend using the filter at a later time. After the filter has dried out, it would need to be tossed because of the possibility of bacteria growing inside of it.

We packed a Pur pitcher in our checked luggage for our trip this past August and it worked beautifully. We preferred the taste of the Pur filtered water over the bottled water available at Publix and on-site.

We are leaning towards renting an OL since DH just bought DD and I the mini Keurig for traveling.
