Bringing The Magic Home - 8/20/05

:cat:

Okay it's official! From the back page of section A of USA Today...Panama City high 87 low 75, Philadelphia High 94 low 78!! :sunny: This is just wrong. We are not supposed to be hotter than Panama. Oh well like someone said there is a nice hot breeze. And an interstate outside Denver was closed because of SNOW!! :cold:

I figure everyone saw the story of the little boy who died on Mission Space. Really terrible.

As for packing I have certain parts of my closet marked off for the things I plan on bringing. Have a box with various items that come in jars and bottles and of course several boxes of zip lock baggies. They are always useful. Speaking of baggies, I had to throw out my water shoes, left them in a closed baggie after the last cruise in April. Not a pretty sight. Got new ones from Lands' End. Nice cause they weigh just ounces rather than half a pound. Every ounce counts.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBARA !!!

I didn't realize that there was a spare bed under all my packing items. Glad it isn't just me. :rotfl2:

Oh my, a little boy died on MIssion Space. How horrible. I definitely have been cut off over the weekend. No news, no nothing.

Count me in for taking over the ship on 9-2!! Just let me know what I have to do to accomplish the task! :teeth:

Weather here is finally drying out. I can't believe how much rain we have been getting. No complaint though, we still need all the moisture we can get. Just no hail, please.

Barbara, Have a birthday as special as you are. Hope you have a great day.

Can anyone tell us more about the Mission Space accident? We had heard nothing until it came up here. Thanks for filling us in, if you can.

Pam

I found a post about the accident:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/06/14/di...h.ap/index.html

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida (AP) -- A 4-year-old boy died after passing out while aboard Walt Disney World's "Mission: Space" attraction -- a ride that has caused previous concerns because of its intensity.

Daudi Bamuwamye passed out Monday afternoon while on the attraction, which simulates a rocket launch and trip to Mars. The Orange County Sheriff's Office said his mother carried him off the ride and employees helped her place him on a bench.

Paramedics tried to revive him, but he died about 5 p.m. at Celebration Hospital.

The sheriff's office said the boy did meet the minimum 44-inch height requirement for the ride at the Epcot theme park, which simulates twice the normal force of gravity.

A cause of death could not be immediately determined and an autopsy was expected Tuesday.

Officials said the boy was from Pennsylvania, but his hometown was not immediately available. He was on the ride with his mother and sister.

The $100 million ride, one of Disney World's most popular, was closed after the death.

In 2003, Disney began placing motion sickness bags in the ride. During an eight-month period in 2003-04, six people over age 55 were taken to the hospital for chest pain and nausea after riding it, though none of them was found to have any serious injuries.

It was the most hospital visits for a single ride since Florida's major theme parks agreed in 2001 to report such problems to the state. Updated figures were not immediately available.

Signs warn visitors about the intensity of the ride.

"For safety you should be in good health, and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness or other conditions that can be aggravated by this adventure," one sign on view last year said.

Disney officials in a statement after the boy's death that they are "providing support to the family and are doing everything we can to help them during this difficult time."

And let me also confirm that our spare bed has cruise packing started on it already - are we all nuts or something? :confused3

Allan

Yes! We are all nuts! I've been buying books to take - I'm going to need an extra suitcase for the books! Does anyone have any authors or novels that they have read and recommend? I want some good reading for those sea days!
I've pre ordered the new Harry Potter for the kids - but not sure if I want to bring it - it'll be heavy I guess and I don't want to leave it behind like I'll probably do with the paperback novels.
Diane

I'm reading a really good book now called "When The Elephants Dance". I also just read the first book in a trilogy called Joesphine B. That was really good too. The Kite Runner was fabulous. I also have a bunch of books that I will bring with. I hope to maybe exchange books with someone on the ship.

Also my favorite book of all time is Memoirs of a Geisha. Great read for a cruise.

Oh - I remember someone else telling me about that one - and then I forgot about it - I'll put it on my list for next time I go to Chapters :sunny:

That would have had to be WAY outside Denver because we had 81 degrees today!

Hey Estelle, aren't eight ounces the same as a half a pound? :rotfl:

I love reading and would like to be in on a book exchange to cut down on the pounds of stuff I'm bringing, but did anyone from the May cruise have time to read??

sticking my nose into the thread for a second.

I read four books. One of them I got from the Cove Cafe. They had some hardbacks locked up in a cabinet (I think you had to check them out) and some paperbacks lying around. I just took a paperback. You might be able to donate books to the cafe when you're done with them, ask up there. They had lots more paperbacks at the end of the cruise than they had at the beginning.

Catherine, loved reading your blog! Can you post your t-shirt design over here? I think it was great! Also, if you could e-mail me the graphic, that would be great too!

I am on the laptop and the graphics are on the other computer. I can email them tomorrow. Which one did you want? I did one for your cruise, but only because of a suggestion by DJ Pike (so blame him).

there's more than one? I only saw the Reposition That one, but anything you got is great!

Tracy

The one I did for our May cruise said "Reposition This." They were all over the ship. I met DJ Pike at the British pub night and he was impressed to meet the person who made the shirt. He suggested that the August cruise should have one that said "Reposition That."

So now it does. I'll remind myself to email it.

I guess, Barbara! I heard that the earth moved! Glad your birthday was wonderful!

Happy Birthday Barbara ! Sorry I'm a day late. The wishes are still as heartfelt though. Hope you had a wonderful day. :wave2:
