I just had this emailed to me. Could this work? Pass it on if you think it could help.

See what you think and pass it on if you agree with it

We are hitting £106.9 a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1.10 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,whoever
thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) .. and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... ..

THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!! Acting together we can make a difference . If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE

It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso

Doesn't address the main cause of the high cost of petrol and diesel in the UK - tax!

Well over half the litre cost is tax (duty and VAT).

With oil rising from around $60/barrel to $100/barrel in 2007 I can't see the cost of fuel at the pumps going down to 69p/l anytime soon!

I say cut the tax on petrol and increase it on non-essentials like cigarettes and alcohol.

I buy mine at Sainsburys & as Goofyish stated it is the UK tax that has made it even more expensive. It was in the paper yesterday that the average price per litre in France was 94 pence for unleaded, it is even cheaper for diesel & Germany was even cheaper.

Unless the Government do something then it is only going to get dearer.

we normally get ours from Tesco or Sainsburys. Unless any other local garage is near by and we need the fuel. I cant see it changing any time soon. It does annoy me on how much we pay though.

You may get a litle further with this website:

If he manages to get his idea working (and the more people who register with him the better his chances) you should be able to get regular savings on your petrol. I already had a link from him to Boilerjuice and I now get a reduced price for my heating oil from the same suppliers.

I can't remember the last time I bought petrol from Esso or BP!

Like other posters I buy mine from a supermarket (Tesco) and that is 104.9 at the moment, the same price at BP outside my place of work!

Not having a go at the OP but this seems just another email chain letter.

Probably...

...but there is a far easier solution to cutting our petrol costs whilst still using our vehicles everyday.

Slow down a bit. Driving on the motorway at 60 instead of 80 can increase your MPG by up to 20%.

Drive more carefully. Instead of hard acceleration and braking, accelerate gently and slow down gently. This can save up to 40% of your fuel costs around town.

Drive a manual instead of automatic. Manuals tend to have approx 10% better fuel economy than automatics (think of the cuts in usage the Americans could save).

All this would cut down our demand. We would therefore be paying out less because we're filling up less, and lower demand means the oil companies drop their prices. Basically a win, win situation...except:

Good old Charlie Brown and his little Darling would then lose out on the massive tax benefits they are getting from high oil prices. Now, don't us poor punters get done for windfall taxes if we benefit in that manner?

Well at least i know who's been stalking me now :)

....and instead of a 100 mile trip taking an hour and fifteen minutes, it will take closer to an hour and forty five instead. In this day and age when schedules are crammed, people are busy and cars are faster, this is not at all a realistic solution.

and lower demand means the oil companies drop their prices
Lower UK demand does not necessarily mean that, especially if offset by rising demand in China and the far east.
