Ok heres a question I bet you haven't heard before. What do you all think anbout someone (me) brining his bagpipes with him when DW and I go to Saratoga in September?
I am a competitive piper and I really hate to not practice and play a few fun tunes while I am away (I usually bring them with me when I travel) but I would not want to upset my DVC neighbors either.
Any thoughts??:scratchin :scratchin

Think of it this way. Would it bother you if someone brought their electric guitar or drum set & started practicing? While I probably wouldn't mind it most of the time, If you were to play when my kids were trying to nap or something, I'd be less than happy.

LOL! This reminds me of the time we were driving down a major street in Minneapolis and saw a fellow out in the big grassy roadway median practicing his bag pipes! We figured his wife kicked him out of the house!:p

I would like to say that I don't think anyone would mind but I would be kidding myself and you. I think it would be kind of cool to hear you once, but you have to remember that people are at the hotel for relaxation, not to hear the bagpipes. You also should remember that SSR is close to the LBV golf club and if I were about to tee off when you started playing, I would not be happy about it.

Maybe you could go over to EPCOT and play in England? People would just assume you were a CM. ;) Of course getting the pipes through security could be interesting.

as long as you avoided lunch time and late afternoon nap times and perhaps weent somewhere like the fireworks viewing area i don't see why it would upset people. they might even enjoy it.

We were at VWL during Christmas '02. While waiting at the bus stop on Christmas Eve morning, a gentleman was playing the bag pipes on the grass near the front of the hotel. It was very cool!! Perhaps you could find an out of the way place where you wouldn't disturb anyone. My DS is a drummer/percussionist and only his mother loves to hear him practice!! LOL

I am one who loves the sound of the bagpipes (helps to have served in a Highland infantry regiment) and I would feel quite at home listening to you play the pipes, however I'm also one who realizes that this is an acquired taste that not all have taken to.
Today an acquaintance in my curling club defined a gentleman as one who knows how to play the bagpipes and doesn't.
The pipeband to which I belong (and haven't attended in a long time) spends a great deal of their time practicing their tunes with chanter alone. While it doesn't bring the drones into action, it would certainly be one way to keep up with the tunes.
Perhap Disney might be willing to let you use Discovery Island in Bay Lake -- although its status as a migratory bird sanctuary might preclude the use of such a weapon as the Great Highland war pipes.

I have to admit that if I heard the pipes while I was in my room, I'd be annoyed. The only time my family comes back to the room during the day is when we need to nap for an hour or so. A couple of rounds of "Amazing Grace" would put an end to that, and to our good moods as well. Sorry to be grouchy about it. But while pipes are much niftier than a neighbor's loud stereo, they can be just as rude if they intrude without an invitation.
:o

I think it would be totally cool to hear that at a resort provided it was during the waking non-nappy hours of the day - perhaps mid to late morning

thanks

Instead of SSR, stay at BWV. You could practice over by the EPCOT gates and people will just think you are part of the show!:p :earseek:

Change your ressies to Marathon Weekend in January. You can play for hours to a cheering audience anywhere along the course!

About 5 years ago while staying in a one bedroom at OKW the family staying in the attached studio brought a violin. While the violin is a beautiful instrument, it disrupted our stay terribly as the owner whipped it out and played any time he felt like it (including first thing in the morning). It was amazing how loud the instrument actually was...it was difficult to talk over.

Of course we would love to hear you playing the bagpipes at the right place and time (grew up listening to someone practice). Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same way.

This past St. Pat's Day my hubby went out with 2 of his friends and guess he felt I needed a dose of bagpipe music so at 9:30 he called the house. When I didn't get the phone in time, the sound of bagpipes BLASTED through the answering machine. My daughter, who sleeps through her alarm every morning, shot right out of bed to investigate. Starting Monday, I'll have my CD's on hand to get that kid out of bed!! :teeth:

When I was growing up my dad used to play tapes of bagpipes constantly. To this day I can't hear them without crying. I think I must have been the wife of a piper who went off to battle and never came back!! But, I love them. You could travel with me. But, most wouldn't feel that way. There has to be someplace you could go that wouldn't be a problem. I would check at the front desk when you check-in. If I remember correctly, the bag you carry with your pipes in it isn't very big is it?? I remember thinking that how did all that stuff fit in there.

There is always DD. You would probably fit right in there. And you can probably walk there to. Or just pipe on the walkway, back and forth.

At SSR? Sure, why not. Fits with the theme of the resort. OKW would be fine as well. Perhaps very, very early in the morning would be a nice treat for the resort guests, right as the sun starts to rise. Or up and down the interior SSR hallways to welcome the new day. Or you could pipe in front of the resort to welcome pleasure island guest back as they retun as PI closes late at night (or early am). Guests might get a real kick out of that.

But not at BCV or Vero please. These are more quiet and peaceful resorts, it wouldn't fit in with the atmosphere or theme.
:teeth:

As one whose DH plays the pipes I wouldn't mind at all. I am used to it, although I prefer them in an outdoor venue rather than in my house! If you do play outside in an open area you may draw a crowd.
As mentioned by a previous poster mention it at the desk. I would think that the area of the SSR facing DD would be a good choice as there is so much action over there anyway.
If it is too noisy, you may have to make do w/your chanter. Have fun.

DS is a music performance major in college, and I know your need to practice is perfectly understandable. He brought his trumpet to OKW last May to practice. He stayed in his room, only practiced during the day (not before about 10:00 am or after 8:00 pm), and never for more than 1/2 hour at a time. Also, I think he had a mute on his trumpet so the sound wasn't too loud. Do you have any kind of mute you could use on your bagpipes? Maybe if you're real careful about timing and considerate (maybe even informing your neighbors of what you're doing, and asking them if there's a non-disturbing time). Sorry for all those people who don't agree, but as DS reminded me as he lugged his trumpet to WDW, what did Dizzy Gillespie say-"If you miss practice one day, you know. Two days-your band knows. Three days-your audience knows." But be considerate!

i wish that you would be there in November when we are there, would love to hear you play.:bounce: :bounce:
