I just took dd to the doctor and have to bring in a prescription for amoxicillan. I was just curious if anyone has had to transport a refrigerated medication and how you did it. Are freezer packs enough? What about for the return trip? We don't fly out until 7pm, get home at 10:30, so I need to keep it cold the whole day. Also, will it keep cold on ice at the resort? We are staying at All Star Sports

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I would bring a small soft sided cooler with a few frozen ice packs on the plane. Your hotel will provide a small fridge for the RX. You may want to call them and note it on your reservation. (make sure to state it is for medication, so they do not charge you).

We've traveled more times than I care to remember with anitibiotics. A freezer pack will keep it cold enough for several hours.

Another option would be to ask the MD if he can prescribe an antibiotic that doesn't need refridgeration. I finally got smart on our last trip and was able to get dd meds that didn't need to be refridgerated.

Have also run into this problem. Even ice keeps it cold enough in the ice bucket during the day and over night if you don't have a fridge. Just keep replacing the ice. You will probably need a small bottle size cooler if you need to take it into the parks with you. Usually you need to give that 3 times a day.

I also started requesting meds that do not need to be kept cold.

Agree with the above. As for the trip home--a cooler should be just fine. Amoxicillin can withstand 12 hours outside refigeration after mixing, so you shouldn't have any problems with the trip home. (PS I'm a pediatrician!)

Thanks for all the input. I called ASSports and the girl said we could rent a refrigerator or they might be able to keep it refrigerated at the front desk (or somewhere for us). I figure I will just keep it on ice all day. I believe it is 2 tmies a day, so morning and night- not in the parks.

As for a different medication- I am curious what another one might be for future trips. It is for dd1 who can't take pills. The pharmacist didn't seem to think there was anything similar I could ask the doctor for.

Thanks again!

i've know of folks whose pharmacist will do up just enuf to get them there and then put just the powder in another container with instructions on how much water to put in that container so you can mix it when you get there and have the fridge there.

There are several antibiotics that come in chewable form (Augmentin comes to mind), so we tell the dr. we're going to be traveling and he tries to pick the drug with that in mind. I have found that the chewable forms are more expensive than liquid .......

Call back. You should not have to pay for a rx refrig. Disney provides them free of charge.
My daughter had a liver transplant so at sometimes we caarry around $1500 worth of medicine, most of which need to be refrig'd. Cooler bag is just fine.
Have fun!

Liquid Zithromax does not need to be refridgerated. The other bonus is it's only a 5 day course as opposed to 10.

That's odd. I know we've had a liquid antibiotic that didn't have to be refrigerated. But maybe the pharmacist knew it wouldn't be appropriate for your DD's diagnosis.

Our ped. gave us enough samples of Augmentin (the expensive stuff!) that gets mixed up as needed, enough for two doses so it got mixed every morning. Call back and tell the dr. your situation BEFORE you pay for the meds.

also let ped. know where you are going-some antibiotics instruct you to stay out of sunlight as much as posssible.
