Bringing ice into an Indian restaurant? OK to do?

here is Houston, I do not know of any Indian restaurant that gives water without ice and I have been to several. The only other thing I can think of OP is that they do have special silver jugs that hold chilled water. I cannot imagine just giving tap water unchilled unless someone specifically requests it. It is not a tradition to give just tap water. In India they have jugs made out of mud and kinds look orangy in color that naturally keeps the water chilled.:yay::yay:

82 replies and one thing is perfectly clear. Papa Deuce should have done a poll! In the meantime Papa, bring the ice. Warm water? Yuck! Its a restaurant's duty to please the guests, not the other way around.

Papa I got you!

Have your girls carry a Sigg bottle or a sports bottle with ice in it. They can bring it in this

I wouldn't be concerned about offending the owners. They are a business, providing a service. THEY should be concerned with making ME comfortable.:)

No, she told me what she thinks all people should think, and I don't think that, so why would I let it pass? I fully expected disagreement, but I am never shocked or surprised when some folks on the DIS go too far and get angry over a simple question....

This simple question has actually offended some folks. Righteous indignation almost.

Imagine there's no heaven, no religion too..... ;) ...... Geez, that might have killed some in its day. ;)

I think you had already made your decision before this thread....are you looking for justification?

well I wouldn't go there if they didnt serve what I like. I personally don't think it shows respect to bring in food/whatever to a resteraunt unless it is in a food court. I can just amagin one of those practicle joke shows sending in someone to a resteraunt and them make a picnic....as the waiters and staff look puzzled and not knowing what to tell or do for the "customer" lol. Well businesses do have the right to refuse service also, so I would take that in mind if they have a custom that prevents them from serving ice and you show up with it. Just my 2 cents is all....

now when do you post GOTACHA ????

I dont eat Indian food but my son does and he said he has never been where they didnt have ice in thier drinks .

You post some out there things sometimes , sometimes just strange things but this is just so wierd and random LOL
NOt haten just staten

it does make me chuckle that some people think that its a given right to be offered something that they DONT STOCK or SERVE and if they dont have it they should run out and get some for you or let you bring your own ....

its a rather distorted view of service.

Its THEIR restaurant, they serve their food and drinks how THEY see best, if you dont like it, dont go there. Restaurants are not designed to offer any and everything to every customer who thinks they should make them "comfortable". They serve their menu and drinks, cooked well, end of story.

sheesh - is drinking a refrigerated chilled water really such a frickin problem?! Some people are just waaaayyy too precious.

.

Because ice being available is pretty much expected by 99.9% of all folks, even if they choose not to take ice?

Hey, I can tell you the story where Maggiano's INSISTED we must take the bread ( well really it was just the waiter ) they offered, when 3 people at the table we sat at were on Atkins and didn't want the bread on the table.

Is THAT service?

Well, if it's company policy that bread be served to every customer than he was just doing his job. Would you rather he be at risk of being fired because people had no self control?

This thread just gets sillier and sillier. I'm like a moth to a flame. :lmao:

wonder if the party explained they were on atkins and had no self control over bread being on the table....

He would not be at risk. Be serious.... all the waiter would need to say to his manager is that the folks at the table asked for no bread to be served.... Now who is saying silly stuff?

Some of you folks just so want to disagree with me that some of you can't even think straight. :rotfl:

Ever been a server at a chain restaurant by any chance?

Yeah... about 4 of them. And NONE of them would have fired me for meeting a customer's request.

I worked at Outback years back, when their motto was "No Rules, Just Right" - and it included anything and everything.

They didn't want bread - they didn't get bread. They wanted a steak with american cheese on top - done. No Rules, Just Right.

I also worked at Olive Garden before that - actually was a trainer. They also had the same rules (just no snazzy catch phrase about it) If it was on the menu, even if it was in other dishes, we could make it. Mussels with broccoli, tomatoes, garlic on penne pasta smothered in bread crumbs and topped with olives and Italian dressing? No problem.

If I brought bread to a table who specifically said they didn't want it, and that table asked for a manager, I'd be in deep.

I did find this at allexperts under ice;

Traditionally, drinks in the United States are served with ice; in Europe they are served with or without ice. In India and other parts of the world, it has traditionally been viewed as unhealthy to drink a libation with ice. Many older Indians still refuse to use it.

So I would guess that if you brought it in they would be offended.

How would you feel if someone brought their own BBQ sauce to your BBQ restaurant?

If Indians refuse to use ice in their drinks because it's unhealthy, why would they be offended if I use ice?:confused3

If they serve great food, and the only issue was the ice, I'd call and ask if they'd mind if I brought some ice for my water. I have no problem bringing a small ziplock bag of ice for my drink. It's such a small issue...just plop the ice into the glass. I can't believe I'd actually offend anyone in the restaurant. They might look at me like I'm an oddball, but that wouldn't bother me. I'd rather be an oddball than a busybody being offended by seeing someone put ice in their glass. Oh, the horror!:scared1:

It's "lose".
Sorry but that drives me crazy.

Would you have corrected the spelling if you agreed with the post?

Not everyone is so quick to be offended, so I don't doubt that PD wouldn't care if someone brought their own BBQ sauce. There are better things to worry about. But if I were you, I would NOT let them know that you're now a Titans fan :p And there is a lot more rudeness being directed toward him as opposed to the other way around. This place kills me sometimes.

My guess is that the owners of this particular restaurant would probably be sad to know that they lost a customer over ice (for all those suggesting not to eat there). They wouldn't be losing ANYTHING if he brought his own ice for the water and continued to enjoy a restaurant he likes.

Silly me. I assumed that the reason they didn't want the bread on the table was because they KNEW they wouldn't eat it and didn't want it to go to waste.

Carry on.

PD...really do what YOU want. You should not ever really care what a bunch of strangers on a discussion board think.
