Hi everyone.

Okay so here is how it goes....apparently (according to my mum and her friend) we can't take any food or drinks past security. They said you can buy things after the security bit and then take that on the plane. Does anyone know any truth in this? I thought you just couldn't take any liquids on board?

I'll tell you why....We havn't purchased the plane food so we were just bringing sandwiches and stuff to eat. Plus we have a 2 yr old who is a very fussy eater so we had to bring food for him. I don't want to but things in the departure lounge as I'd prefer to eat nicer food that I make that doesn't cost a bomb!

Let me know

Thanks

Ohh and if anyone would have any ideas for snacks for 5 and 2 year old boys.

Just had this sent to me

"Following Saturday's terrorist incident at Glasgow Airport,
additional security measures are in place at all BAA airports.
Dropping off and picking up in front of the airport is severely
restricted and passengers are warned that there may be significant
delays in reaching the terminal building by car. BAA strongly
recommends that you use the long stay car parks or travel to the
airport by public transport.

In addition, hand baggage restrictions implemented last year remain
in place. Just to remind you, passengers are only allowed to carry
ONE item of hand baggage. If you need to travel with liquids, they
must be in individual containers not greater than 100ml capacity.
They must be placed in one transparent re-sealable bag, no larger
than 20cm x 20cm (8" x 8"), and fit comfortably inside the bag so it
can be fastened closed.

We hope this information has been of use to you but please keep
checking the website for the very latest updates (links below). We
regret any inconvenience that these events have caused.

Kind Regards

BAA Airports"

You need to look at the airports terms regarding food, i.e. if they class some pastes as liquids.
But drinks, nothing more tha 100ml in a bottle.

We travel 4 times a year to US, mostly with Virgin from Manchester. Always take packed meal as I dont like Virgins food. Only thing we buy is a drink in Airport. Flew Xmas and Easter from Manchester no problem taking it thru.
There was a thread a few weeks ago saying they were stopped from taking food thru but I have had no problems.

Looking good so far. I don't mind buying water in the shops- I expected that and am quite happy to do that

We took snacks through with us at Manchester at the end of May without any problems, we have a very fussy and allergic 8yr old :goodvibes. Have a great holiday

At Glasgow airport there is Boots once you are through security so we bought a meal deal which obviously included a drink and had with us some M&S treats :)

The M&S treats were mini eggs, sausages and a chocolate mousse!

We took snacks for our 1 and 4 year old girls, their favourite healthy snacks (organic goodie bars, dried fruit and puffs) and some naughty ones too (jelly babies etc) I found hard lollipops great to suck for take off and landing to help with ear pressure (no worries about them choking on a hard sweet). :thumbsup2
I also took those nesquick straws away with us meaning their milk was always a bit different and it was a fun distraction at those tired moments.
I gave them a banana a while before we landed and it boosted their energy to get through that horrible airport/hire car/finding hotel bit!
To be honest the food on virgin wasnt bad, I did request vegetarian meals (although we are not vege) as it's the meat on the meals I don't like.
HTH. Good luck.

I even tried the veggie option at Easter, Mushroom Rissotto, I could not eat it, worst thing I have ever tried on a plane and I am not a fuusy eater.
I have flown with most Transatlantic carriers and Virgin food for me has sunk from near the best 10 years ago to bottom.

Thanks for the tips guys. I think I'll definately bring lollipops, bananas and some M&S sausages (i love these things! lol). So glad I can bring my own food (I'm not sur ewhy my mums friend had hers taken off her?).

Any more suggestions welcome.

I'm a bit slow sorry!!;) - if you bring snacks and meals for the plane, do you then have to taste them in front of the staff ?? I was told i'd have to try baby formula and jars in front of them so would it be the same as that??

Sorry to be thick!!:thumbsup2

Don't know about baby food but never had to taste my sarnies in front of anyone.:goodvibes

Yes apparently you do have to taste baby food?? Because its sort of liquid or something like that.

I wonder if your mums friend had stuff like seeds or uncooked meat or pate, they can be strict on stuff like that. I eat a lot of food doctor seeds for snacks and I decided not to take them on the plane but pack them instead, incase they were confused for plant seeds!

I asked my mum about baby foods and she said you only have to try babys bottles not the jars of food if the jars are sealed. Sometimes however if you can buy baby food jars past security then they make you buy it there and won't let you take your own. Just my mums thinking though.

Uncooked meat, pate and seeds are FINE going onto the plane.

You cannot take meat/pate into the US (See http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/prohibited_restricted.xml#FoodProductsPrepared)

Edible seeds will be fine going onto the plane and should be fine coming off of the plane too (since they can't propogate...)

If you had a jar (or similar) of pate, you would/may have problems taking it through security here in the UK(because it is a gel/paste) - would need to be less than 100ml and in your clear plastic bag  . However, taking pate sandwiches through security is fine...

There is NO restriction about what type of solid food (i.e. not liquid/paste/gel) that you take out of the country or onto the plane. There is only restriction on what food you take into America (i.e. through customs). So you can take your meat/pate sandwich onto your flight to the US, just throw away any uneaten pate/meat sandwiches before you disembark.

Although they say that "Mum's are always right", sometimes it is better to er on the side of BAA instead... ;) http://www.gatwickairport.com/assets/B2CPortal/Static Files/Can_and_CantDec06.pdf
