Bringing food off ship in Alaska

I remember from my Caribbean cruise that you‘re not permitted to bring open or non-packaged food off the ship at the ports. But how about in Alaska? My young dd’s get pretty hangry and just wondering if I could wrap up a bagel or croissant from the continental breakfast and throw it in my bag to give them late-morning during an excursion, or pack an opened bag of goldfish crackers.

All ports we've been in (Caribbean or otherwise) have not allowed any fresh food/produce to be taken off ship. Only pre-packaged (sealed) snacks - nuts, granola bars, etc.

Alaska also requires sealed, pre packaged food. You could bring mini cereal boxes, granola bars, etc. One warning is that for Juneau, we did one of the glacier shuttles on our own to Mendenhall Glacier. You aren't allowed to have ANY food there due to the bears. We had sealed snacks with us and just left them on the bus with the driver...and timed it right to get back on the same bus and got our snacks back.

The U.S. has similar import rules as other countries when it comes to fresh fruit and food, plants or agriculture, animals, etc. Remember, as far as the U.S. is concerned at Alaska ports, the DCL ship is coming from Canada - regardless of where you began your journey before boarding the ship.

Assuming they still have them available, you can take the Smucker's "Uncrustables" sandwiches off the ship.

You can order them through room service the night before the excursion. Just put them in your room's refrigerator. These are really good snacks, especially for kids.

Do you know which flavour(s) they usually have on the ship ?

Thanks.

Bumping this thread to find suggestions of other pre-packaged items you can currently get onboard.

- Uncrustables from room service
- Chips from the pool desk
- Cereal from Cabanas or room service

Anything else I'm missing?

That's all I saw, and we only ever remembered to grab cereal from Cabanas... uncrustables would have been good for my kids but I never did get around to ordering them... next time!

So what do people do on the long excursions that don't include a meal? Mendenhall and whale watching for 5-6 hours starting at 8:30 is going to leave my whole crew starving. Uncrustables ain't gonna cut it.

The excursion we went on didn't mention any food (whales and science) but did provide a snack bag for each guest (fruit leather, trail mix, chocolate, maybe something else) and a bottle of water. We also had some granola bars and cereal we brought (left on the bus at Mendenhall) and then grabbed lunch just before the buffet closed when we got back on board. Uncrustables plus the included snack would have satisfied by kids a bit more than they were with just the snack bags though.

Thanks. We booked the one that included lunch but it was cancelled out from under us. Super frustrating.

We bring packaged snacks from home: granola bars, dried fruit, pretzels, crackers, nuts, trail mix, etc. Anything that is sealed up is fine. We then pack some snacks in our backpacks for the day and munch if we're hungry.

we got stuck with the late dining, so I’ll definitely take advantage of uncrustables for an early “lunch” then we’ll grab local food for lunch #2 after the excursions, most ending around 1:30 or 2:00

Are you on the waiting list for early dining? I've been scheduled late originally on my last two sailings but the wait list request came through both times right around 30 days out.

Yes we are. The only good thing about later dining is that we can maximize the times in the ports so I’m really okay either way I suppose. It’s more that the kids are used to eating earlier, and with a time change from the east coast I’m a little more concerned. But just happy to be on vacation again!
