Bring your own in flight movies and the rating

It just dawned on me that when we are going to rent a movie for our notebook on an upcoming flight there might be kids in eyeshot of the screen (it's a rather large screen ;) ). I don't have a problem with many "G" rated films, but I don't exactly want to be tied down to those exclusively when making a selection. I also don't plan on renting any gore or porn either. What about those middle of the road films? Would you have a serious problem if your young kid was behind someone on a flight in eyeshot of a PG13 film?

What type of thing is appropriate and what is not? Some of this would seem to be common sense, but I don't know what the person behind me might freak out about :)

Example: We don't have any issues with guns, but someone might forbid their kid to see that sort of thing, and I really don't want to ruin anyone's flight over something trivial like this.

I've never even gave it a thought. I only flown a couple times before and can't even remember being able to see the people in the seat in front of me. I'm bringing movies with me on our flight this Saturday but they will be of the Elmo & Blues Clues type for my 2 yr old son.

We were on a an airplane a couple of weeks ago and the in-flight movie was something that I would NEVER have let my children see at this age. I was so disappointed in their choice of viewing material - violent in my opinion.

For your own viewing I would think that what you have suggested would be fine. I would have a problem with porn or things of that nature given that passengers are in a contained environment. But you'll have head phones (get the noise cancelling kind - they work best) so its not like they'll hear every word.

I think you'll make a fine choice.

Ok, Elmo is a "no", I suppose I could handle Blues Clues but only if it's with the new guy... ;)

Dora is right out of the question :)

What? You'd bring something not Disney-related? ;)

I did this with my notebook last trip. We did the Disney route: PoC and Finding Nemo.

Get them ready for Star Tours: Star Wars all the way! ;)

It's thoughtful of you to consider others on the plane. I am one to really watch what my kids see on TV and at the movies, but as long as you have headphones, you should not have any problems. I would doubt that kids could see your screen. (I know I can't see over the seats - yes, I am short...) I'm sure that as another poster mentioned, there are many films shown by the airline that are not what I would consider appropriate for children. Have a great trip!!

Bring what you want. The way I look at it, there are lots of parents with mini-DVD players (and NO headphones) who have no problem subjecting me to Barney and those @@$%&&**!! Wiggles for hours on end, so if their nosy little monsters are peaking at my screen and see something they shouldn't, oh well.

I flew to MHT-LA in April and I brought what I wanted to watch (a lot of CSI and more 'adult' type movies and shows). Its a small screen on my table so for someone else to see it they would need to be pretty nosy.

What about puting a pillow between your two seats? I know my daughter wouldn't care if the movie is not some kind of cartoon or for small kids, she's almost 4. However I can see a problem with a kid older than her.... let us know how you manage that! Although we will take also Disney movies it would be nice to take something different for mom and dad!

The only people who may be able to see your screen would be anyone sitting next to you, those who are behind you on a diagonal, and those going to/from the bathroom.

In choosing my plane movies, I steered away from the violent (Kill Bill, Shawn of the Dead) and went more for comedies. I bring 5-6 movies and then choose based on my surroundings. For example, I sat next to a 10 y/o boy in May. I put in Empire Strikes Back and did not feel bad about it. I would not have put the Virgin Suicides in when he was sitting next to me. If it was an adult, I may have. Its really a toss up as to my mood and what my surroundings are.

I agree 100%! Why should you (as a paying customer) have to worry about what others "think" about the movie your watching. If they don't like it, LOOK OUT THE WINDOW (the thing we used to do before all of this "high tech" dvd stuff!)

It's not about "having" to do anything. It's what I am choosing to do. I'm trying to find a happy medium between entertaining myself and possibly ruining someone's flight.

Don't worry, he'll be using headphones or there won't be any movies at all. And no Dora. Barney and the Wiggles are not even allowed in my house.

Well, I never really thought about bringing POC (my 2yr old actually likes that movie) but the problem with full feature movies is that they don't hold his attention long enough. Also, my laptop battery won't last through a full feature movie anyway.

You really can't go by what movies airlines show. They get specially edited versions of the movies.

I certainly wouldn't bring any hard core or even soft core porn. You'll have headphones and the screen isn't that visible to other passengers. If you have a middle or window seat even people behind you can't really see the screen. Avoid an aisle seat and I'd watch anything, including a R rated movie.

Even R movies are normally rated R for just a few scenes.

I appreciate that you are thinking of your fellow passengers, especially children.

I think that most PG-13 to light R movies would be OK as long as there is not a child who could watch the movie from their seat. I would be upset if my DD saw a steamy sex scene or ultra-violent scene from her seat or even on the way to the bathroom. I have literally covered my DD's eyes when walking by someone on our way back from the bathroom with a very violent movie on their PC in the aisle seat. I also saw some photo pornography on a PC (middle seat) once walking my DD back from the bathroom.

Like Lewis says, those scenes are usually just a few in a movie, so you could turn the screen away from the aisle when they come on. Also, if you're in the window or aisle seat it's less likely that someone will inadvertently see something.

Robin, I'd think the window or middle seat would be better. The aisle seat is visible for passengers walking down the aisle and probably the passenger in the seat diagonally across from you, across the aisle one seat down.

The brain thought "middle" and the fingers typed "aisle".
