bring a dish to a baby shower?

You know so many people do the pot luck thing here for showers and birthday parties and such that I have really gotten used to it and I don't really think much about it when it happens.

But I didn't want my dd to grow up thinking it was acceptable either so I always privately pointed out to dd that this was tacky and she shouldn't ever do that and at the same time showed up at the party with a gift, a dish and a smile. I guess I think its tacky but I understand that most folks in my area don't so I'm not going to let it stop me from going and enjoying the event.

I was invited to a wedding in June. We had 4 days to respond to the R.S.V.P. and we were all asked to bring a dish to share to the wedding. Yes, I went and brought food, but I (and my co-workers) really thought this was more than tacky.

Like some others, I'm all for pot-lucks. Like others, I'm opposed to someone throwing themselves a "shower" which is specifically designed to be about receiving gifts.

Mostly, like Katy Bell, I say cut the cake, pour the punch - every party doesn't have to be a full meal. I grew up going to parties that only had dessert. My mother used to invite neighbors or friends over for dessert regularly, or a group of ladies in the afternoon for coffee and cake. She even had the little plates designed for dessert and a tea cup.

It took me awhile to catch on. I went to several parties, after eating at my meal at home first, and wondered why they had all that food. I still think that if there's going to be a meal, especially if it's not a typical meal time, I'd assume they'd mention it on the invitation.

Ever since I started reading the DIS I'm afraid to invite anyone for dessert for fear they'll be insulted I didn't invite them for a full meal! Although I often have the kids friends stay to dinner, I'm simply not that confident a cook to be throwing dinner parties. That means we simply don't entertain much anymore. Sad.

I saw some of those dessert and cup plates recently at a garage sale and was tempted, but realized I'd never be able to use them because they simply wouldn't fit the buffet you're expected to serve at every gathering.

Actually, it's fine to have any kind of party you want, as long as the guests know what to expect.

If I got invited for "coffee and cake" then I would expect coffee and cake. I wouldn't expect a full buffet.

If I got invited to a dessert party, then I'd expect dessert. I wouldn't expect a full buffet.

If I got invited to a "cocktail" wedding reception, then I'd expect cocktails and some hors d'ourvres. If people are going to be drinking, it's generally good to throw a little food at them. I love pigs in a blanket, so I could eat them all night!

However, what I don't expect is for someone to throw themselves the kind of party which pretty much requires me to bring a gift and then have the person also expect me to supply my own food.

A potluck dinner isn't tacky when it's a group of people getting together and verybody's going to bring something so one person isn't stuck with al lthe work/expense. Me inviting people to my home to honor me with the type of party where they will be bringing me gifts and then telling them they also have to bring me food to serve to them at my party is tacky.

According to people like you and me, that is! I've seen MANY times on the DIS how people think it's tacky to entertain without a full meal with multiple choices. Heaven forbid someone might not like or not be able to eat what you serve.

I can see it now. What if they don't drink coffee, what if they don't eat sweets, etc. I fully understand both concerns since I don't drink coffee and sometimes don't eat sweets, however I would happily go just for the visit. To me it's not about the food - but to many people it just IS.
