Bright idea!

Hi all,

I just had a bright idea about my roses. Can I plant each one in a large pot that can be moved to a sunnier area of my yard? Will they grow well enough in pots? I'm thinking if I keep them properly fertilized this may solve my problem with them. What do you think?

Hmm, MaryD. I don't really know. I'm not really a rose person (despite my name). I think it may depend on the type of rose you will put in the pot. Some of them grow quite large. Sounds like a good idea but uncertain as to if it really is.....sorry I'm no help.....

Hi Mary!

With 18 rose plants you know far more about roses than I can ever hope to know. I have enough trouble keeping my one climber, climbing.

Roses can be grown in containers, and the following are some recommendations I found for pot size.

Miniature roses - bush or tree - 12" - 16" diameter
Hybrid tea or floribunda bush roses - 24" minimum diameter
Floribunda tree roses - 30" diameter

Re-Potting Roses

Re-pot roses grown in containers every 3 - 4 years. For best results do this in winter when the rose is dormant. Remove the plant from the pot, hose off or fork away the soil from the roots. Prune the root system by approximately on third of the root mass. Prune the top of the rose plant by approximately 40% to 60% and re-pot in potting or rose mix.

Snowwark, you are the best! This is exactly what I need. I'm so excited to move them now but will refrain until spring. I still need to strip all the foliage off of them and get them covered for winter. I'm sure my plants are confused right now. We haven't had much rain and today it was 65 degrees! Very strange for a northwest fall. Usually VERY wet.
