Bridal Showers

Oh, FCOL, there is no "right" or "entitlement" of being the honoree at a shower! This is the kind of thinking that creates Bridezillas.

Showers are nice if you get them, but you won't die if you don't -- heck, you won't even suffer, unless you call being disappointed in the "gimme" sweepstakes suffering. And yes, a bride's parents hosting a shower for their own daughter is tacky, especially when that daughter has already been in her "new" household for nearly a decade.

I have been dating my boyfriend for 8 years and we have lived together for 6 of those years. We also have a 5 year old son. I'm 26 and he's 27 and we have a house that used to be his grandparents. All of our stuff is hand me downs. Yes, we did do things backwards but I sure hope that when we do finally decide to get married that I'd be able to have a shower without people thinking less of me. It's not that i'm looking for gifts since we do have a lot, but it would be nice to have matching dishes, new bedsheets....things like that.
Now i'm worried that when we do get married people will think it's tacky

I do think its a bit tacky to have a shower after living together for SEVEN years! At that point you should get married with just close family and not make it a giant production, its just silly after living together for that length of time. I recently was invited to a shower for a couple living together for 5 years and they had a 4 year old child together-I think at that point its just a case of saying "gimme some gifts"...its even worse when they are living together for years and then throw an engagement party AND a shower-

let me clarify that in my situation DH and I had been engaged for a year before living together--.... not that i need to clarify-- but i feel as though this 'tacky' thing is really a big word in this thread.
