Breaking News. Hezbollah says they've activated sleeper cells.

Miss Jasmine said:
That does not sound like a Hezbollah-like move.

Oh, and the fear of Iran getting nukes should center around Russia not North Korea.
I agree - doesn't sound right

I'm totally ignorant on this conflict. I'm watching the coverage, but it escapes me.

can anyone give me a primer on why we are so tight with Isreal, and where we stand on Lebanon?

We've always been tight with Isreal - and theyre not a threat and they are an alli.

We really have no problem with Lebanon - but it's not Lebanon who Isreal is fighting - it's Hezbollah, who has taken over the entire southern region of Lebanon (think Taliban)

Well, I think terrorists do want to cause terror in people so maybe the threat is real. People will worry more even though we all worry since 9/11 compared to before. But with the majority of Jews in NYC, I am not sure why they wouldn't want to attack there. The hate for the Jews is not something they hide.

Sounds to me like Israel is having an effect on Hezbollah. They are trying to put pressure on the U.S. to stop Israel.

Good for Isreal.

I have always admired their strength in a region filled with hate for them.

Ben Franklin said "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Somewhat OT, but there's very little evidence that 'Ol Ben ever uttered that in his lifetime. Though it appears an any number of quotation books and web sites, historians have found no written evidence that Franklin was the originator of this quote, or any of the numerous variations that have appeared over time (often containing grammatical errors). It probably belongs in the category of Washington's "Father, I cannot tell a lie." quote. The closest this quote comes to Ben is a different version of it appears in a book, not of his authoring, that was printed by his printing business. The true author appears to be one Richard Jackson. In fact Franklin was in England trying to patch things up between the Colonies and the Crown when the work was published:

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Benjamin_Franklin

It sounds like something he would have said, or agreed with, but the closest thing that is known to have been said by Franklin was "Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power." in an edition of Poor Richard's Almanack in 1738.

I don't offer this in an attempt to refute the idea contained in the quote, but being one for historical accuracy and seeing as it's been bantered about post-9/11 so much it's almost become a cliche, I thought I'd bring it up.

A similar misattribution - http://www.winstonchurchill.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=112
"Conservative by the time you're 35"
"If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain." There is no record of anyone hearing Churchill say this. Paul Addison of Edinburgh University makes this comment: "Surely Churchill can't have used the words attributed to him. He'd been a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! And would he have talked so disrespectfully of Clemmie, who is generally thought to have been a lifelong Liberal?"

I don't believe they had 'sleeper cells' anywhere! I think whatever 'cells' hezbolla has are anything but sleeping. They are just blowing smoke, IMHO. I think they are trying to frighten America into putting the brakes on Isreal's attacks against them.

They'd have MUCH more success if they'd just return the soldiers they've kidnapped. Then America might be more likely to view things differently. I hate all the kidnapping they do in the middle east. I veiw kidnapping as the work of a coward.

A lady I worked with told me something that made me think. She said instead of people getting all worried about Mexicans coming in this country illegally to take our jobs we better start worrying about the ones that want to come in and take our lives. They are right around us. Do I care that phone calls are being monitored???? They can listen as much as they want. I fully give them my permission. These are such scary times. Am I glad Bush is President? You bet!!!!

:thumbsup2 Thank you for saying this.... :)

I have to agree with this, listen away if it makes the world safer! (They would really wonder what I do with my life but its cheap entertainment!) Besides, there has to be someone whose calls you want to listen to.....

"This is how liberty dies. To thunderous applause."

Bravo to all the fascist lovers out there that don't mind their government ILLEGALLY listening to their phone calls. Suppose you next won't mind having to show your papers on demand?

...or having your home searched at a whim...or having to submit to body searches anytime you go to a public place...or having your financial and medical histories accessible to the government for whatever purpose they may want them...

The cowardice of some people makes me wonder at their insistance on saying how proud they are to be American. They're so frightened that they're willing to give away everything it means to be an American, just for a little illusory protection.

Not sure whether it makes me more sad or disgusted. This country used to have people with guts living in it. I guess those days are out of style in Shrub's world. But hey...when their leader is a coward who hid behind daddy to avoid a war, what else should we expect? :sad2:

Awww, fudge - this can't be good :(

If it's any reassurance, Iraq claimed that they had zillions of suicide bombers and ready to roll martyrs when in fact they had next to none - kind of a scare tactic.

On that note, V for Vendetta comes out in one week, a movie where we can see where this path could take us.

Seems a famous patriot from a while back was quoted as having said:

Give me liberty or give me death!

I have to agree with the above poster. Let them listen to anything they want to. I have absolutly NOTHING to hide!

I understand what you are trying to say but, just for the sake of accuracy, the NSA wasn't listening to conversations, they were tracking calls from known terrorists outside of the country to those within.

It certainly is, but lets remember, the Brits weren't terrorists and didn't target civilians. Big difference between King George's soldiers and Hezbollah.
