Discount carrier CanJet cancelling scheduled service as of Sept. 10

from http://www.cbc.ca/story/money/national/2006/09/05/canjet.html

The Halifax-based discount carrier CanJet Airlines is pulling out of the scheduled airline business next week to focus on its charter business.

"With the rising business risks of operating a scheduled airline, I.M.P. has decided to suspend year-round scheduled airline service and focus on their increasing charter business," IMP chairman and CEO Ken Rowe said Tuesday morning.

He promised to offer alternative travel arrangements for anyone booked on CanJet flights scheduled after Sept. 10, the last day of scheduled service, or give full refunds to ticketholders.

He did not immediately disclose how many employees would be affected. Some will be offered positions in IMP's other aviation businesses.

CanJet is a division of IMP Group Ltd., a privately owned diversified group of companies headquartered in Halifax with extensive interests in aerospace, aviation, manufacturing, health care, industrial marine products and hotels.

The airline was founded in 2002 as an alternative to the mainline airlines. It flies 10 aircraft to Atlantic Canada with service to Halifax, Moncton, St. John's and Deer Lake.

It also flies to Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal and to the Florida resorts of St. Petersburg, Orlando and Sarasota.

Wow! Just what we need - less competition. Not.

My daughter flew Canjet this summer when she went to Guide camp and we were very impressed with how they handled their group booking. There were 120 girls over 3 flights and they had a ton of gear. On the other hand, my husband always avoided flying "Cramjet" because he felt squished.

Too bad. It'll be bad for the local economy I expect.

:badpc:

Bump to make sure that some people out there with Canjet tickets see this

RIP Canjet. We'll miss you...

I hear they're providing assistance in re-booking to people holding tickets and/or refunds.

My DH found out about this this afternoon and booked an Air Canada flight Halifax-Orlando and a Westjet flying back Orlando-Halifax to replace the Canjet round trip flights we have to Orlando for this October. The new flights were actually cheaper and stretch out our Disney stay a bit more ;) but we are out the $$ we paid for the Canjet flights if there is no remuneration from Canjet...we will see if they stand by their statement that they will refund the tickets. It totally messed up our reservations and our magic express but we got that all sorted out tonight...

This Canjet thing really came out of nowhere!

So, presently we have a pair of Canjet return tickets for Halifax-Orlando if anyone wants to buy them...we'll let them go pretty cheap...har har

Yeah, I just got the bad news from our TA. Our flight was booked through canjet for Sept 30th, with return Oct. 7th. We do not have money to buy another set of tickets, but luckily we bought trip insurance and one of the covered risks is "cessation of operations" of the travel provider. We were doing a layover in Ottawa. I am hoping we might get a direct flight through another provider, and also come back later on the final day than we were with canjet. May as well try to enjoy more disney fun.

*EDIT* Looks like I may be screwed because Canjet is offering refunds. Flights on my dates with another provider are $500 more than what I paid for the Canjet flight, and insurance only covers "non-refundable" costs up to $2000. :sad2:

I'll find out for sure when I talk to my TA tomorrow.

Oh, that would be awful. Good luck getting it sorted out!

Canjet just updated their website...check out FAQS...they are still in negotiations with other airlines so you might be in luck!

Good luck

At least Canjet did not pull a Jetsgo & stop all operations in the middle of the night by not telling anyone, which affected a lot passengers across Canada & the United States. Plus it affected their employees, who had no idea what was going to happen. My family & I had never flown Canjet, but at least they did the right thing. Some may say it's cutting kind of close to September 10, but they still told everyone & in my books that is good karma.

wow...canjet cancelled our flight to disney about a month and a half or so ago, we got a phone call, and we were able to rebook on westjet asap. i was mad at the time because we have to pay about $40 more per person for 3 of us, but now i am happy we had that head start. sorry for all those who have to scramble to rebook their flights elsewhere. :O/

I'm in a position where I CAN'T book another flight, because I don't have the extra $500 it would cost to do so at this point. All I can do is wait to see what kind of "alternative travel arrangements" (if any) Canjet will make for us.

This sucks unbelievably badly.

Everyone must have booked the best flights already, cause what I looked at was more expensive than the canjet flight out of halifax. :(

I managed to find cheaper flights if I'm willing to leave in the afternoon and come back a day later. This means paying the money for one extra nights stay, but that's better than $500 more. Unfortunately I can't book it without money. I only hope another similar cheap flight shows up when I get my refund, or that Canjet can schedule me a flight. Whatever costs me less money is good.

I still think the airport taxes, NAVCAN charges etc are killing Canadian Airlines. I just spent $300 for a $218 ticket from TO to Halifax.

I lost just over $400 in the Jetsgo fiasco, not much compared to others. At least Canjet is not going under.

As much as we love to hate AC, they have never left me stranded.

Alright, looks like my TA will be able to book Continental for me. Her company will pay it for me and get the refund from Canjet. We're just waiting to see if disney will extend our booking for one night.

The original flight cost $1050
The new flight will cost $944 and the extra night $155

So for an extra $49 we lose a half day at disney on our first day, but gain a day and a half at the end! Plus we can stay up later on our wedding day. I hope disney will be kind and grant us that extra day.

Turns out I had my numbers wrong and got an even better deal:

My TA managed to book airfare with continental that cost only $945. The airfare with Canjet had been $1265. (I'd forgotten taxes in my prior post)

We took part of the $320 return to book an extra night with free dining (but had to switch the whole package from CSR to POR to do so).

The rest of the money is bing used to pay off more of my credit card for any emergencies while we're on vacation.

Yay!

I'm shocked by the Canjet news. My friend who works at Canjet might be losing her job for the third time. 1)Royal 2)Canada3000 3)Canjet? My friend told me less than a year ago that Canjet was a profitable airline and all was going well.

Hope everyone finds alternate flights.
