But really, TLC, home of Honey Boo Boo and Kate + 8, has a reality show that is not reality? Shocking

Just another show to exploit children/young adults.

I skimmed this article a few days ago and I was not one BIT surprised. These "Amish" kids know as many curse words as I do (ok, more).

I was uncomfortable with the concept of the show (if it were real, they are coming between young people and their families in a very public way).

I think I am thinking of an entirely different Amish show. It is the one about the ex Amish guy and he helps ex Amish adjust to regular life. I can't think of what it is called.

I would say with the exception of contest shows, all reality TV is somewhere between "scripted" and completely fake.

I skimmed this article a few days ago and I was not one BIT surprised. These "Amish" kids know as many curse words as I do (ok, more).

I was uncomfortable with the concept of the show (if it were real, they are coming between young people and their families in a very public way).

I thought the same thing. Even when they were all back on the farm, they were doing things that most Amish kids would never be allowed to do. Most Amish communities have very strict rules governing dress and conduct. Those kids were waaaay too comfortable with "Englishers". The girls want to be models? The boys are cursing a blue streak. The one boy who is set on getting his drivers license so he can "pick up chicks"? Seriously? Does he think he can waltz into NYC, learn to drive in one week, and get a valid NY drivers license? And I can hardlly get past the fact that they are allowing themselves to be photographed at all. In most Amish communities photos are not granted because of injunctions against idolatry. And the way they are speaking to their parents and grandparents? There is NO WAY that would be allowed. In Amish culture parents and extended families can be disciplined for letting their children be disrespectful. I can't imagine real Amish families putting up with that for one minute.

Actually, i like the Mennonite girl. She's the only one who seems at all real to me. She is modest and hasn't seemed to forget her upbringing.

Not quite true. I have relatives that in Lancaster County and they have many Amish friends. Adolescents starting around 16 are given quite a bit of leeway. Some call it rumspringa. The adolescent is seen to be testing his faith and way of life. Some actually do leave and try out modern life.

Most come back to be baptized in the church. Once they are baptized, then the strict rules come into play. But before then, because they are not baptized yet, the kids are given quite a bit of leeway to test the waters.

I work with a lot of Amish ( there is a ton of mental health issues within the Amish community)

They arent as sweet and innocent as one would think. One girl got busted texting on her prepaid cell phone by her mom ( I was having a bad night that night so when she told me that I literally ) the only time she wore her traditional clothes was when her parents were coming to visit. She also had pictures in her belongings and there were some very not nice sign language in some of them. I did ask how she charged it, a power converter in the barn from the tractor.

My BIL is a PSP. He says the Amish teens can be the worst, drinking and driving their buggies.

I live in York County, PA which is right next door to Lancaster County and know that the Amish are not as pure and innocent as outsiders think, but this is ridiculous.

And when Kate said she always wanted to be a model, ever since she saw modiels in the magazines that they had at home, that was a giant red flag. What Amish family has magazines with models in their home? Maybe a tractor catalog but Magaiznes with models??? I don't think so.

Funny you say that but after visiting Lancaster for my first time a few months ago I could easily see how the Amish could have model magazines. I couldn't believe how integrated they are with the community. They were dining at restaurants, shopping at stores - you name it. And their houses! Simply beautiful and most had many conveniences that we have around our house??? It didn't seem like Amish at all.

The Amish in northwestern New York are NOTHING like that. Very traditional - what I expect Amish to be.
