I'm curious if this yummy dessert is something only southerners make?

:confused3

I've eaten many variations of it. :stir:

I was born and raised in the south and I've never had any. :confused3

I actually thought it was a northern thing...we have it all the time here!

Nope. There's plenty of variations of bread pudding here in New England

No! My goodness, I think it has been around as long as America!

read Pudding is an old fashioned dessert that had humble beginnings in 13th century England. It was first known as a "poor man's pudding" as it was made from stale leftover bread that had been simply moistened in water, to which a little sugar, spices and other ingredients were added. Today, we still make our bread puddings with bread but the breads we use are often made especially for this pudding and the types are wide ranging; breads like brioche, challah, croissant, panettone, French, Italian and sometimes even raisin bread or scones. We are also not content to simply soak the bread in water, instead we use a rich mixture (really a custard) of milk (or cream), eggs, sugar, vanilla, and spices. Sometimes even nuts, chocolate, zests, alcohol, candied, dried or fresh fruits are added for more flavor and texture. The end result is a rich, creamy, decadent dessert that has now made its way onto the dessert menus of many fine restaurants.

:stir: I grew up in England and my Mum made it all the time. I love it and of course it's very nostalgic for me...real comfort food.

I love bread pudding. Grew up Back East. Can't find it in Texas, so I have to make my own.

You must use a good sour dough bread and real cream. And real vanillia.

There is no fat and no calories in it.

They serve it at Ohana - maybe it's Polynesian. On the other hand, it could be southern. Or maybe northern :confused3. Or British  :teeth:. Whereever it's from, it sounds like people all over the world eat it :).

I don't know how good it is, but a lot of my friends like the bread pudding/rum(?) sauce from Central Market (which I think originated in Austin).

Anyone have any really good recipes for BP.. The best BP I have ever had was on Holland America Cruise Line...It was so good with a vanilla type sauce.

We have bread pudding out here as well. Heck, they even serve it at Hometown Buffet.

Wow, I don't know what part of Texas you're from, but we have all kinds of variations here in Austin. It's mostly considered a Cajun thing here though....

Mmmmm My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

It aint a southern thing for this southern thing. ;)

I don't like it. But I think its made everywhere.

I love bread pudding, we have it quite a lot over here in England. My MIL makes the best bread pudding ever!!

the best bread pudding I have ever had was at House of Blues at DTD. They have a Banana Bread pudding that is to die for!!

My MIL makes the BEST bread pudding. It is so,so good. I have made it but it doesn't taste as good as when she makes it. Everytime we visit each other DH and I beg her to make it and she always does. She is a very nice MIL.
