We're realizing how crazy the price of bread is these days. It struck us the other day when we went to Costco and it cost more for two loaves of bread than an entire huge bag of broccoli.

Considering getting a bread machine now. Anyone have experience with one? What's a good one? Do you think you actually save $ by using it instead of buying loaves?

I have a William Sonoma breadmaker. I love it and I don't know how much I save compared to th quality, taste and variety I make. I like the ffact that I can place all my ingredients in the night before set the timer and the kids have bread in the morning for b-fast and lunch.

I LOVE   my bread machine. I use it all of the time! We always use it to make pizza dough in it...it comes out perfect every time. Mine is from Walmart. I think they're around $50. I buy bulk sized bread flour from Sam's Club for abt $12 for a 25 lb bag----very inexpensive. I don't make as much bread as I thought I would initially, but we use it almost every week for pizza dough---that alone has saved us the initial cost 10 fold!

Good luck!

I love my bread machine. I don't even know the brand. I use it for everything...actually I use it more for making the dough than I do to bake it. It really saves not only money but also time for clean up. I make dinner rolls and french bread in mine. You can use any bread recipe and use the "dough" function to mix it, knead it and to let it rise. I usually buy flour in bulk. Also if you are planning on making breads that require yeast..Sam's is the best place to buy the yeast. I got 2 huge packages of it for 4.88. The little packs at the grocery store are usually around 2.00 for 3.

go back to Costco and get the Cuisinart bread machine, we paid $90 for it a few weeks ago. Then go down the baking aisle and get 2# of yeast for super cheap and pick up a big bag of bread flour. Bread flour has a higher gluten content than regular all-purpose flour and you'll get better results.

We love this machine, our 10 year old walmart cheapie finally gave out and this new one makes great bread.

We have one and make a lot of pizza dough and sometimes hamburger buns. You do have to plan ahead. I'm interested in the pizza dough recipe anyone else uses for theirs. I've used the one for hillbilly housewife but sometimes it's a bit dry, and I'd be up for trying something new!

I usually buy sandwich bread tho so I can get the "light" - don't know how to make that in the bread maker. Also homemade bread doesn't keep as long and there's only 2 of us

I have a Black and Decker one. I use it to make the Bread Dough, then cook it in the oven as I found it dries out too much in the machine.

I don't buy special Bread flour, I use Whole Wheat all-purpose flour. I have a good Multigrain recipe that I make weekly. I split the dough into two smaller loaf pans as I give one to my niece who is lactose intollerant. I also make pizza dough in the machine for her.

I buy the yeast in bulk also as it is less expensive that way.

The recipe I have is:

1 cup Water or Milk
1 Egg
2 Tbsp Oil
2 Tbsp Molasses
1 tsp Salt
3 cups Flour
1/4 cup Multigrain or Oats
2 tsp Yeast

I usually add some ground flax seed and some sesame seeds in also.

If the dough seems too wet when it is finished I kneed in a little more before putting in the oven.

you can freeze your homemade bread too. I just put it in a freezer bag and suck all the air out. we don't use it fast enough either but this way I am not throwing it out. We use the hillbilly housewife recipe for dinner rolls. They are Fred's Favorite Rolls or something like that. Anyway, I with that recipe I make dinner rolls, hot dog buns, and hamburger buns. They are wonderful. Everyone loves them.

She also has a very easy biscuit recipe. They are easy to make and don't take much time at all.

I would love to know how to make a less dense homemade bread also. I am currently using the recipe that came with the bread machine. It does have a sandwich setting. I am making a 1.5 pound loaf. Does anyone have any suggestions or recipes they would be willing to share?

Don't know if it's any good or not, actually just got the bread maker for Christmas on Thurs., but this is the Sandwich Bread Recipe that came in my user manual.

1 cup water
1-1/2 Tbsp. soft margarine or butter
1/2 tsp. salt
1-1/2 Tbsp. non-fat milk powder
3 Tbsp. sugar
3 cups High-Gluten Bread Flour
3/4tsp. fast action yeast

Run on Sandwich Setting
The book says that the High-Gluten Flour is the key to sandwich bread, bagels, hard rolls, and thin crust pizza.

Hope this helps!

I have the BreadMan Pro machine. I got it at Target a year or so ago for around $100. It works great. I love to make different varieties. Buying yeast and flour in bulk at Sams Club saves a bunch of money.

Bread Machine Pizza Dough

I haven't used my bread machine in years. I don't like the bread baked in it for some reason. But after reading this thread I am now wanting to pull it out of the basement and try recipes on the dough setting and baking it in the oven. How do you go about doing this. Do I just take it out of the bread machine and put it in a loaf pan? How long would I bake a loaf for?

Thanks, Lori

I almost never bake bread in the machine - I don't like the shape of the loaves you get. I usually make rolls/buns instead. Those are easy to do. A recipe calling for 4 cups of flour will make 24 dinner-roll size rolls. I roll the dough into a log, cut it into 24 pieces, roll each piece into a ball, and either put them into greased muffin pans or set them side by side in two 9 by 13 pans. Let them rise again for about 30 minutes. Depending on the recipe, I would usually bake them at about 400 or 25 for 10 to 12 minutes. I make lots of different kinds, usually with whole wheat flour or oatmeal or other whole grains so they're nutritious, and add herbs or onions or raisins for flavour. Sometimes I make breadsticks or flatbreads or loaves. And of course we make pizza dough all the time, too, and sometimes calzones.

Wow, there must be a run on bread machines b/c I just bought one last week :) I love making fresh bread. My friend gave me a recipe for a sweet bread which the girls and dh loves....even when I added an extra egg instead of using it to brush the top of the bread I added it to the batter.

I love love love my bread machine. Problem was that I loved it too much - now we're on a low-carb diet :lmao:
Seriously, it's super easy and very cost effective. Recipezaar has some really terrific recipes.
That said, if you're slammed for a loaf of bread, the Dollar Store (or could be Family Dollar) sells bread - the same bread you buy in the grocery store for $4 a loaf is there for $1 a loaf...it's an awesome deal. I go there once every two weeks and buy four or five loaves and stick them in the freezer.

I take my Whole Wheat dough out and divide it into two smaller loaf pans. I warm up the oven to about 100F and let it rise for 20-30 min. Then cook it at 350F for 15 min.

I have had my bread machine for ten years a Sunbean, not expensive. But, I never found enough time or cost saving over buying store brand bread and rolls.

I do use it for special bread times, special breads, making dough for pierogies (the kneading)

I use it for the enjoyment of the smell of bread for a nice dinner, but never to have Lunch sandwiches;

At a Church flea market I found a rack to place the bread in to slice, I love that. for open face sanwhiches, left over turkey or Beef and gravy sandwiches, Cream chiped beef on toast it give great wuality to the bread instead of just airyness.

I also substitute one egg before adding the water or milk....instead of water and dry milk!

I use Honey with the sugar or instead to a great taste.

Raisin bread I soaked my raisins in hot water with baking soda...to fluff and soften.

Pizza dough and stromboli, to the knead point setting.
