Bread Machines

Squirrel, thanks for the directions. I am going to try that. I made Kolachki's last night. Found the recipe on allrecipes.com. YUM!

Try your local resale shop. I bought mine there for $4 and they had about 8 of them to choose from. It was really clean--I don't think it was ever used. I cleaned it again very well and have been using it ever since. :)

I buy sliced bread from the store but I use my bread machine for pizza, rolls, sticky buns, special occasions and this fantastic stromboli recipe I stumbled upon. My family asks for this often and it is a good budget dinner to keep you from going out for pizza!

Give it a try, I really think you will be happy with the results. The only thing I have changed is that I sprinkle the top with coarse salt and/or parmesean before baking.

I have also used this recipe to make a Rueben type stromboli. I used leftover corned beef from St. Patty's and added swiss and caraway to top. Mmmmm. I really think you could fill this with any ingredients that you would normally have in a panini or other hot sandwich.

If you haev a stand mixer you really don't need a bread machine.

I used my bread machine all the time before it finally broke and I got the mixer. But I never baked my bread in the machine. I just used it to need the dough and baked bread in the oven.

They're a dime a dozen used at thrift stores. I have a Sunbeam here in Cali and an Oster in Texas. Both work the same way, I just set it and let it do it's thing. Although I think the Sunbeam is quieter. Both of them I picked up for $5 each.

Bread machines are great for making the dough, I haven't really had a good loaf come out of the machine baked.

You do if you don't want to take the bread out of the machine, form it, put in a pan, let it rise and bake in the oven.

I have a Zojirushi Home Bakery Supreme 2-Pound-Loaf Breadmaker which I got when the price dropped on Amazon to $179.99. It makes excellent, large, regular shaped loaves.

I actually have four bread machines (three picked up for $5 or less at yard sales). I just make the dough and bake in the oven. Usually make 16 loaves (four different batches) which takes all day, but it's worth it to just put them in the freezer and only bake 1-2 times a month. The kids usually end up taking loaves home with them whenever they visit. The last time I baked it came out to $1.29/loaf. DH will not eat store bread after having home made.

I have a Zojirushi. Expensive but can't be beat IMO. I use it to make and bake bread (from whole wheat and other grains I grind myself) as well as mix dough for things like rolls, tortillas, etc. You can customize the settings to make bread that turns out perfectly no matter your climate or other variables. The machine also makes jam. Now I have delicious homade strawberry and raspberry jam for my homemade bread. The kids think warm bread and jam is a treat!

(By the way, I'm a working and homeschooling mom of 4 kids 6yrs old and under. So making the bread and such with this machine is not difficult!)

I used to use a bread maker all the time til I found this recipe....

You bsically make up a super easy no knead dough and use it through out the week. It makes everything from bread to pizza dough to hamburger and hotdog rolls.

This book

also has the same type of recipes.

I use a machine several times a week, I had a Sunbeam that I wore out. We upgraded to a Breadman after reading reviews last year and we are super happy with it. Much better than my Sunbeam. Bread doesn't last long so I always make my own crumbs, croutons and bread pudding to use the ends.

I haven't used my bread machine in years. I don't like the bread baked in it for some reason. But after reading this thread I am now wanting to pull it out of the basement and try recipes on the dough setting and baking it in the oven. How do you go about doing this. Do I just take it out of the bread machine and put it in a loaf pan? How long would I bake a loaf for?

Thanks, Lori

I haven't had a chance to read through the whole thread yet. It can vary but typically I put bread in at 350 until it browns. Usually 20-30 min.

I never baked in the bread machine because the crusts were so heavy. A normal bread pan in the oven comes out perfect. I cool then slice with an electric knife, which for me is easier to get uniform slices.

After I started doing that, I realized how ridiculously easy it is to make bread, buns, rolls, etc. I also freeze bread. I have yet to try freezing dough but I hear you can. I need to try that. All Recipies has a ton of good recipies. My kids love the Amish breads on there because they are sweet like those hawaiin rolls.

Also for fun, google rainbow bread. It's just kneading in colors. Takes a lot of kneading to mix but a cool effect. I made that last time, I don't have a pic, but my kids went nuts. My oldest is a senior and all her friends were jealous! :lmao: I think I'm gonna make some orange colored bread this week for halloween and cut sandwiches with pumpkin cookie cutters. I'll try and get a pic.

Sorry, you are correct on that one. I should have mentioned I don't like breads baked in the machines. But that might be because I've never had the really pricey ones. When my Sunbeam broke down, I went out and got one of the kitchen aid stand mixers and now I just use that.

(But I can NOT get that mixer to work on cookie dough!)

I'm subscribing because I need everyones ideas and recipes :) I have a Wellbilt machine that someone gave my DH. I used it a few times to make cinnamon bread with a recipe I found online and it was really good, but the kids didn't like regular bread that I made with it. I've been thinking of giving it to Goodwill, but maybe I'll play with it some more before I do.

When I take my dough out of the machine, I let it rise in the oven at 200 for about 15 minutes, then bake at 325 for 15 minutes or so till its done.

I have used a Zojirushi machine before, I found the crust to be almost the same as my Sunbeam machine. But it is a longer loaf, and there's two kneading blades. We tested it before selling it on ebay, it had 54 watchers on it. So it doesn't go cheap in the used market either, unless you find one at a thrift store.

I can't say I've used mine extensively and I've had it only for about a year now. So I can't really give an opinion on how long the other models last in the long run, but there must be something good about a Zojirushi if the prices stay high.

My favorite no fail recipe is a copy cat Macaroni Grill bread. I love it, and I have a fresh rosemary plant in the backyard.

We're realizing how crazy the price of bread is these days. It struck us the other day when we went to Costco and it cost more for two loaves of bread than an entire huge bag of broccoli.

Considering getting a bread machine now. Anyone have experience with one? What's a good one? Do you think you actually save $ by using it instead of buying loaves?

My mom got me one for Christmas last year and it has a permanent home on my counter now! I use it at least once a week, usually more. I've got the Food Network one from Kohl's. It makes up to a 2lb loaf and I have never had any issues with it. I LOVE all of the different settings on it and that it's got a timer so I can put the ingredients in before bed and wake up to fresh, warm bread in the morning! I've figured my expense for ingredients is about $1 - $1.50 for a loaf of 100% whole wheat bread with some ground flax seed thrown in also. Can't beat that! My cost will start going down though, as I just bought a big thing of yeast at Costco last week and don't plan to buy the small jars anymore. I was spending about $4 for a jar of yeast, the big one at Costco was the same price for about 10x more!

That's what we have as well. We use it weekly for bread with dinner. We usually make the dough in there and bake it in artisan bakers (we have about 3 or 4 different shapes). The Zojirushi can't be beat for sandwich bread, though. There is a reason it's higher priced! You get what you pay for in this case.

I agree. They last forever. I had an old Zojirushi which I bought almost 20 years ago and it still works fine. It went to my son when I got my new one.
