A small group of US Marines stopped a potentially huge terror attack on a European high speed train when they wrestled a man bearing an AK-47 to the ground with nary a thought to their own safety. The gunman hurt 3 people but could have done a lot worse had those Marines not been on board.

Actually not Marines this time.
It was one member of the Air Force and one inactive member of the Army National Guard and another civilian

My reading is that the perp claims his intent was to rob people. If so, he seemed to be rather incompetent about it. The word is that he had a fully-automatic Kalashnikov and a Luger. The magazine was apparently dropped from the Luger (got only one shot off), and once the Kalashnikov jammed the perp had no idea how to clear it. That's when they charged him, took it away, then got messed up with the perp's box cutter.

Skarlatos, who had recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan with the national guard, told Sky News the gunman’s AK-47 had jammed and that he had not known how to fix it.

“If that guy’s weapon had been functioning properly, I don’t even want to think about how it would have went,” he said. “We just did what we had to do. You either run away or fight. We chose to fight and got lucky and didn’t die.”

Even so, anyone approaching someone with two weapons and who has previously fired them has done something admirable.

Very brave men - proud to have them represent this country!!!

I am pretty sure the perp's primary motive was not to just rob people, unless it was picking through their stuff after he killed them. His name is Ayoub El-Khazzani and he "belonged to the radical Islamist Movement" (per French officials). He was known to other European national anti- terrorism authorities.

As an Air Force vet, I'm very proud of Spencer Stone and the other brave Americans (and I heard an Englishman as well)! Awesome!

Even IF his assault rifle jammed, it's not the first thing that goes through your head when presented with the spectre of an armed nutter. Anything could have happened, and these brave men took him down and prevented what could have been an even bigger disaster. I don't care that his rifle jammed - these were true heroes and I salute them. They should make every American proud.

He probably just pretend he ws there to rob people to avoid being judge based on conter terrorism laws. In France, the regulation are not the same with terror cases than with other criminal cases. For exemple, the police has 4 days to build their preliminary case against him befor3 going to a judge that will either puting to jail before a trial, release him on bail or dismiss the charges. In a classic criminal case, the police has only 2 days.
There is also special judges, and sentences for terror cases.
He knows he is in much bigger trouble if he is judge on terrorist charges than ordinary criminal charges
EDA : Thanks to the amazing people who stopped him. There are still heroes in this world !

It's certainly counter intuitive, but maybe it SHOULD be the first thing that goes through your head. It does seem that the casualty count is typically lower when the intended victims fight back.

The Brit, a 62 year old businessman, said, "I'd rather die active trying to get him down than simply sit in the corner and be shot."

Wise man. I hope I never have to find out how I'd react in such a situation. These days, I've taken to scoping out the room at all school functions to see what could be used as a makeshift weapon. Sad we have to even think like that :(

While I'm a bit biased that these guys are Americans, I'd be proud of them no matter where they were from. Good job! We could use a more people like this.

These are very brave men, and just incase one of them reads this.
Thank You.
I saw this on the news and they showed a photo of multiple loaded magazines, that's a lot of firepower for an attempted robbery.

These BRAVE men,:thumbsup2 our nation's finest :cheer2: prevented a possuble massacre!
I think, we can eliminate "possible" and insert highly "probable", if not "certain". He intended to kill as many as possible. IMO

These incredibly brave souls were in the right place..at the right time! Hallelujah!
