My DD just had a question similair to this one a week ago from a handout. Was her question your OP a type O? My DD's homework was... I am between 70 and 80 and I am 2 more in the ones than the tens, or something like that. She is in first grade too.

A friend of mine son brought home a brain teaser and we can not figure it out. Can anyone help. 6 adults have tried and we don't get it.

I am between 70 and 80. I have 2 tens plus 1

Are they learning about money? Is the answer 70?

2 tens = $20
plus 1 =$50

Well they got the paper back, but there was only a smiley face stamped onto the paper so I guess we will never know! I am so disappointed. I told her to call the teacher but she laughed at me and told me I was crazy. i told her I promised the disers some answers, but she still didn't seem to change her mind. Sorry everyone.

I hate the questions that could technically be two different answers. He has a lot like that. Not so much in math, but reading comprehension. Drives me nuts.

She put down 75. I don't know how she got that answer, but she didn't think the teacher even looked at it. She said the teacher a lot of times seems to just put stamps on the homework probably thinking the parents helped with the homework anyway. She said her daughter missed a problem once and she didn't realize it before it was sent back to school and it wasn't marked wrong it just had a stamp on the top of the page.
I know how you feel about your second graders homework. My son is in 2nd grade too and they do math so much differently then I did when I was younger. For example they add double digit numbers left to right. I understand how they get the answer, but I can't explain it to my son and it takes so much longer then right to left anyway. I taught my son my way of doing it and he understands that just fine, but he can't get how to do it from left to right and I can't explain it to him, because that isn't the way I was taught.

Actually that (75) is what I figured Nicole's homework out to be. On her paper it was 2 ones less than tens. (something like that) Her teacher never returned it, or it got lost. I will try to remember to ask her if she still has the book and the answer when I get in to school this week.

This would have me stumped too. What about the carryover? How do they do that if they are going left to right?

I am amazed at how much more the kids are doing now than when we were in school at their age. His homework last night had the beginnings of fractions on it.
