Brain teaser on 1st graders homework

Hi, 1st grade teacher here. Maybe I can help.

2 tens plus one would be 21, because it has a 2 in the tens place and 1 in the ones place.

But the problem says I am between 70 and 80. Which makes me think it is misprinted, or you are seeing a 2 when it is really a 7.

7 tens plus one would be 71. And between 70 and 80.

Hope that helps. Otherwise, the problem makes no sense.

Aurora - DD's are in K. Can I have permission to consult you next year when they bring this stuff home?

Anytime, Denae! :sunny:

LMAO Denae! Yep and it seems with every passing year I tend to get more "lame" and my kids seem to get more "brilliant".....or that's what they keep telling me. :confused3

I keep warning them that one day their kids will be smarter than them and they look at me  and tell me NO WAY! I just smile and :rolleyes1

I'm thinking that there is a typo too. Either it should be a number between 10 and 80 with 2 tens plus one making the answer 21, or perhaps 7 tens plus 1 making the answer 71.

I will call her and ask her to look at it again when she gets home. I hope you are right, because this would make sense.

I'm thinking 73 or a misprint. :confused3

thats like the one, that little kids get, but adults mostly fail:
what is greater that god, worst then the devil, rich people need it, poor people have it.
Nothing.

Mom, Dad, and the kids stop at Tony's for lunch, and Mom says, "How much have you got left". Dad pulls a 50 out of his wallet, holds it up and says.....

"I am between 70 and 80. I have 2 tens plus 1...", "let's eat at Pecos Bill's instead."

:thumbsup2

My first thought was 71. It has two tens (plus 5 more that aren't mentioned, but it does have 2 tens in there) and a 1. Just think "at least" two tens. Sometimes 1st grade brain teasers aren't very "teasy".

I had the same thought as disykat. 71 does have 2 tens and a 1. It just happens to have 5 more tens as well.

Wow! That'd be Existential Thinking 101, not 1st grade math!

Just subscribing to this thread!

I MUST find out what the answer is! :teacher:
