ooopppsie daisy!

I was supposed to start on my rubber bands yesterday and when I went to get one out of the package it struck me... rubber=latex. Binny+latex= disaster!

I'm really allergic to latex. I swell up and it does really bad things to my body. It isnt pretty.

So I called this morning and my ortho was really apologetic, she said she should have known better. I told her it was fine, I caught it before I put them in thankfully. Then she said she would order me in the other ones in ASAP.

Do you ever forget you have an allergy like that? Or it just doesnt occur to you that something would set your allergies off?

Yikes! I'm glad you caught that.

I have allergies but I don't have a clue what they are. It's totally random what I will react to.

Fisrt off- hugs to you for having to start putting bands on. Make sure you have plenty of Tylenol handy!!!

Good thing you caught it! My sister is really allergic to latex and it isn't pretty!

I'm really allergic to codeine and I have to make sure I remind any doctor prescribing anything because any member of the codeine family could kill me. I've learned to make it one of the first things I tell any doctor/dentist/etc.

Ditto. Not fun. My teeth are hurting just thinking about it and I haven't worn braces for 15 years. :wave2:

Me either!! I still have nightmares and wake up thinking I still have braces on my teeth (I had mine taken off in 1993!!!)

Who would have thought at 33 Id have to deal with this? LOL

Ive got lots of tylenol and advil on hand, Im still really sore from my new wires yesterday oh well. I told my mom yesterday its all in name of a beautiful smile and she said " Yep, just to match the rest of the beautiful you" :) :( I thought tht was really sweet.

You mom is so sweet!!

I got my braces on a week after I started my Freshman year in COLLEGE!!! Not the best time to to be wearing braces but it didn't slow me down :drinking1

All the pain will be worth it in the end :teeth:

I am 34 and in full braces, and will start elastics soon! I just got a professional job, too, and can't imagine wearing the rubber bands there, but I will have no choice if I want to complete my treatment and have nice teeth!

I know what you mean Eeyore but all in the name of a beautiful smile! I dont know about you, but I spent way too many years obsessing about my crooked teeth! :( It really bothered me. My parents were in no place to be able to afford braces for me so I just sufferred through them. Now that I finally feel like we have some expendable income ( I know it stinks that I think that way but I do) I went ahead and got them. Ive had mine on since June and there is such a HUGE difference already I cant believe it! My teeth are almost straight now  Now I do this :teeth: a LOT more than I used to!

It isnt fun having braces but just thinking that I will have the rest of my life with a beautiful smile makes it all worthwhile! Hang in there! We;ll make it through this! PM me if you need a buddy to commiserate with :)

the one thing that still makes me cringe when I hear braces is the canker sores inside my cheeks because the darn wires keep slicing it open! {{{shudder}}}

I remember going to the dentist, he'd put new wires on, an hour later my braces would pop off my tooth, then I'd have to go to the dentist again that same day and get rewired, readjusted! Pain and agony for 2 years! And my teeth still rotated anyway!

Good luck to all you braces wearer!

Make sure (when you get the new ones)that you wear the rubber bands! If you don't, they have these little springs that they attach in place of the rubber bands that you CAN'T remove. :earseek: Yes, I know from experience.

I'm in braces, too, but I get my top ones off in 2 weeks! WHOOPEE!!! I am terrible at remembering to wear my bands, they do hurt some but not as bad as when the wire digs a big hole in my mouth. Thank goodness for wax!!!!!!!

I thought I was the only one....

I'm a senior in college and have had my braces on for about a little more than a year so far. I had impacted adult teeth (3 of them! and one that had come through behind the baby tooth through the roof of my mouth) that the dentist never made an issue of until one day. Thus, the baby teeth that he assured me would come out eventually, had to come out through force... and soon! My teeth weren't crooked to start with so the braces just are kind of guiding in the new teeth. The orthodontist said March is looking good for getting them off.. and that is looking good to me!

Thankfully I have not had to get rubberbands or any of the other torture devices... although I do have a metal wire thing (not quite a bar) across the roof of my mouth. Oh braces.. I love ye. ;)

Boy, I am in the same boat on everything!! I had horrible teeth since adolescence and I hated them! I had dracula fangs, buck teeth, and lowers that looked like old tombstones leaning over! Unlike most people who grew up with bad teeth, I had fairly well-off parents who were socially naive. When I was a teen, my parents laughed at my dentist when he suggested braces for me. They simply did not want to bother or spend the money. I can't even begin to tell how badly my teeth wrecked my self-esteem. I always felt "second class", especially since I lived in a wealthy area where I literally was the only kid with crooked teeth. :(

People who never had bad teeth don't understand what a disavantage it put's you in life. In this day and age, you NEED straight teeth and a nice smile to get ahead. I swear, my bad smile ruined job interviews for me, and people treat you different when you aren't attractive. I could write a thesis on this subject!

I been in braces for almost two years now, and it was the best decision I EVER made. My teeth are so nice now! I can open my mouth and smile, and I can grin without embarrassment! :teeth: And people treat me better now, and recently I aced my first interviews in years and got a job!!!! Absolutely no doubt in my mind is because I fixed my teeth.

Thanks for letting me commiserate, too!! There aren't too many adults in braces out there, so nice to see some here on the DIS! :)

DD is allergic to many metals. Lots of jewelry makes her break out and swell. Sometimes she even gets blisters. And I don't mean just cheap jewelry either. She has to be very careful. Sometimes even playing her silver flute makes her lip swell and itch.

When she got her braces they kept claiming she wasn't brushing good enough, since her gums were swollen. They even took her off of all sugar for over a year. I couldn't understand because I'd watch her brush and she seemed to be doing a good job. Right before the braces came off, it hit me. She was allergic to them. How could I have been so stupid? :confused3 Since then, no more swollen gums!

awwwwwwwwww (((Hugs))) Eeyore!

I can totally relate! I was so self conscience about my teeth growing up :( And always felt like the only one who didnt have straight teeth.

My SIL told me other day that our culture here is very different from those shes visited abroad. She says that she heard in Norway while she was there " You can always tell an American because their teeth are perfectly straight and white " Now I dont know if thats true or not but that is what she was told.

But our society focuses so much on your smile ( and your weight) where I think other cultures focus on other attributes.

Elastics aren't too bad...you get used to them, and then your mouth feels weird when you're not wearing them! Head gear is the worst IMHO. I could never wear it for the entire night. I took it off in my sleep!

I'm allergic to cinnamon. One time, I bought a California Grill frozen pizza. I plopped it in the oven and couldn't wait for it to be done to try it. I took a small bite out of the crust to see what the crust tasted like when I took a whiff of the sauce. They put cinnamon in the sauce.:( I didn't eat it, but now, anytime I buy a frozen pizza, my dd will ask me if I've checked to make sure I can eat it.:p
