My boys love going to see Yankee games and Met games at home. They thought it would be a lot of fun to see a game while we are in Cali. WHich stadium, team would you suggest?? How far are they from DL?? Are they in safe areas?? We will have a rental car if that helps. I'm thinking of a night game so we don't lose a whole day of rides at DL. I of course am more interested in the amenities of the stadiums. Best food, snacks, souvenirs etc.. Thanks for the help :thumbsup2

San Diego Padres, because it's a modern stadium. It's on the edge of the downtown but about 90 minutes away or more depending on traffic.

Angels though are only 5 minutes down Katella, the road behind California Adventure.

Doger fans are dangerous.

Angel Stadium isn't that far from DL at all, very close! I haven't been to many other stadiums close by except for Angel Stadium and Dodger Stadium. I wouldn't go to a Dodger game because the area around there is a pain to get out of (if I remember correctly it's been awhile) and there have been quite a bit of... fights happening there but it seems to be a bit more under control.

With Angel Stadium there aren't a lot of 'fights' that happen but if they do it's during certain teams the Angels are playing and it tends to happen in the Right Field Pavilion, but it's not often at all and it's very safe. There is a lot of security and everything there to ensure the safety of everyone. They have a play area for kids (they can play games and such, kids seem to love it!) They generally have a firework show on Fridays, and it's actually pretty awesome!

I don't know anything about the San Diego Padres stadium.

Thanks for the insight. I was leaning towards either the Padres or Angels. I was a little leary of LA and have heard of some fights taking place there. But of course being a New Yorker I know any place can have their troubles (Don't go to an Islander - Ranger game without pads and a taser :rotfl2:) The boys would be thrilled going to any game.

AT&T Park in San Francisco is the best ballpark in MLB, although that may be a bit out of the way ;)

Based on your post I'm assuming you want to minimize travel time to the park, so Petco Park in San Diego is probably out as well, as it's around a 2 hour drive away. It is a gorgeous park, though, the best in Southern California. The fans are pretty tame, the prices are relatively cheap, and it just fits into the city well. Not the most exciting of teams or park effects, though (most pitcher-friendly park in the majors - you're not going to see many, if any home runs).

I'd recommend Angels Stadium (of Los Angeles of Anaheim), because it is so close that you'd hardly lose any time at DL at all, and because it's in a relatively safe area. Plus, you'll see Albert Pujols and Mike Trout, which should be fun.

Don't go to Dodger Stadium. There's a reason some call it Chavez Latrine: it is a dump. The area isn't safe, the ballpark itself isn't safe (see: Bryan Stow), and it'll take you a few hours just to get to LA in rush hour traffic and then getting out of the parking lot is a pain. Oh, and Dodger Dogs are highly overrated.

Really, if you are okay with either Petco or Angels Stadium, I'd also recommend looking at their respective schedules for who they're playing or even if they're at home. That could instantly make the decision for you if one of the teams is on the road, or if a NY team is visiting.

Angels seems like the obvious answer. They're practically on your doorstep.

Angels Stadium is clearly the easiest, though as the previous poster said, the most beautiful stadium in California is San Francisco's AT&T Park. If you come up there, you have an excellent excuse to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco.

I agree with avoiding Dodger Stadium until they've proven their commitment to stop beatings like what happened with Bryan Stow. He will never live a normal life again. It's a miracle that he's even still alive.

Angel Stadium is only about a 10 minute or less drive from Disneyland, so that's good! Dodger games are so much fun! The Angels are a great team. The fans always have fun. The food is really good. Dodger dogs, along with the nachos are the best. Not to mention the great views of Downtown Los Angeles. If you decide to go see the Dodgers, just be careful. Don't come dressed in the other team's colors. Come in your regular clothes or the Dodger colors. Wherever you go, have fun!:wave2:

I agree with the other posters that AT&T park is the best if you are willing to travel... Otherwise, save time and money and go see the Angels!

Stay away from Dodger games... Not worth the risk in my opinion!

Angel Stadium and Dodger Stadium are both great stadiums IMO.

Since you haven't been to either, and you're visiting DLR, I also think the obvious choice is Angel Stadium -- it's just a couple of miles and an easy drive from DLR.

(Dodger Stadium is a 30-mile drive from DLR.)

FWIW, we went to an Angels game on July 28, 2010.

The Angels played the Boston Red Sox.

Here are some photos from that game.

This photo was taken before the game. There were plenty of parking spots:

We bought tickets at the gate, and it took more than a half hour.

Game time was 12:35pm. In the photo below you can see the line for tickets. We got in the line at 11:52am. The ticket booth was located just
below where it says "All-Star Game" -- and the line must have been 100 yards long. Waiting in line for tickets wasn't a good start, but we did
manage to buy the tickets and we saw the first pitch of the game.

We wanted seats between home plate and first base, and we wanted to pay between $30 and $40 per ticket.

We got tickets that were about half-way between home and first, for $35 per ticket.

Here's our view as the Angels took the field!

Later in the game they announced that the game was sold out, with attendance of 44,052, but it didn't look too crowded when the game started.

In the photo below you can see a lower section (with 9 rows) and an upper section (with 15 rows). Our seats were in the lower section ("Lower
View MVP") -- about seven rows up.

The 2nd inning:

It was a beautiful day, but it does get hot in the direct sunlight. Luckily, every park in Anaheim has to have a Splash Mountain: :earsboy:

The 3rd inning:

Later in the game, in the 8th inning, the shortstop Marco Scutaro hit a Grand Slam to give the Red Sox a 7-3 victory. (Josh Beckett got the Win.)

Here's the last pitch of the game:

My daughter Jean Marie (7) and son James (8) after the game.

As we were leaving the park, I took this photo of the field from the lower level. It really is a beautiful park.
(It's the fourth oldest active MLB stadium, behind Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, and Dodger Stadium.)

Palm trees! Gotta love southern California!

Hope this helps. :earsboy:

Thank you so much for sharing! Your kids are adorable :goodvibes I think that everyone is right and the Angels would be the best choice for this trip.

Angeles are most convenient; but Dodgers are bar none the better choice. Great stadium, great food and an overall baseball atmosphere. It's one of few classic baseball atmospheres left.

Make sure that you look at the dates/times of when you are going. Road trips can last a week or more at a time.

Man! A lot of dodger hate in here. I've been many times and have never had a problem there. Actually I've had family members have more problems at the angel stadium. But to each their own. I'd go with the dodgers since I'm a dodger fan but for convenience I'd go angels since its right there. Have fun!

I was thinking the same thing. I've gone to Dodger games, one pretty recently and I've never had any problems. I'm sure fights have broken out at other baseball stadiums too. I'm a Dodgers fan as well.

Man! A lot of dodger hate in here.

Being from NY I'm used to other cities hating our teams (esp the Yankees and our 'friends' from Beantown) I just take it as jealousy and smile. ;)

The boys would love someday to see a Dodger and Padres game. I told them next trip I would work visits to the other ballparks in. But for this trip we'll see the Angels. My little guy thinks there will be Angels in the Outfield , like in the movie  I told him there will be :goodvibes

If you do choose to go to an Angels game I would look at public transit options. I went to a couple of Angels games and the traffic was horrible getting out of the parking lot. It was more of an organization issue than quantity of people. After the game everyone hops in their car and makes a beeline to one of the few exits. There are no lines or people staying in aisles, it is just a mass of cars commingling and cutting each other off to get to the exit.

Granted this was a few years back and you would hope they would have done something to organize the traffic flow. The other option if you don't like traffic like me, would be to leave early. I guess I was just shocked at the level of disorganization in the parking lot given that you are right near a theme park that has crowd/traffic organization down to a science.

Lots of Giants fans in here, haha.

And my one experience at Dodger Stadium was punctuated by a guy yelling at me, "You better watch your back in the parking lot, you [derogatory name for women]!" the day after the Bryan Stow incident. I'm sure now there's beefed up security, especially in the wake of that, but I've definitely soured on going back to Dodger Stadium again.
