ANY man or boy who does this in my presence is given instructions on etiquette and health hazards. My son and his friends know that THIS is THE one thing I WILL NOT TOLERATE. I will tough out swearing, swagger, rough housing, spilling, lots of noise, even back talk with a quiet but firm correction. IF you spit in my presence, prepare to be lectured for an excrutiating length of time. I will tell your mother, your grandmother, your girlfriend, your wife, your boss.....I'd do anything to stop someone from this base habit. No excuse. Disgusting. Classless.

OK...what if you're out running and your lungs are producing boatloads of crap--which is what happens during my exercise-induced asthma--and there is no restroom nearby? You can't very well swallow it. Sometimes spitting actually IS necessary.

I will say, though, that I always try to do it when nobody's looking, and always in grass, so at least people don't have to look at it. It's gross, don't get me wrong, but sometimes it actually does have to happen.

Carry a napkin, cloth handkerchief, tissues, paper towels. It does NOT 'have to happen.'

Huh.

In my opinion, it's much more rude to scold strangers for something like this than it is for someone to spit in public. I'm fairly certain that Miss Manners would have my back on this one.

My son (12) has picked up this vile habit from other boys he hangs out with.

That is, until I started making him wipe up the spit, regardless of where we were and lecturing him about how vile, nasty and uneducated he looks while doing it.

That seems to have done the trick. :thumbsup2

That is awesome! :thumbsup2

I find it disgusting & inappropriate especially in public places.
I hate walking on street sidewalks & seeing someone's spit on the ground it's nasty!

DH will do it when we're walking through parking lots......I find it disgusting and can't stand it.....but it's just one of "his" things KWIM? Yeah it's a pet peeve but he's wonderful in all other ways so I usually let it slide....

My kids won't be doing it though:thumbsup2

There are times when I will turn to my DH and slap him with my eyes for doing too much spitting. Unfortunately, I usually have to further ask him to stop when it is too frequent. I think it is cultural/environmental... DFIL is a big spitter so I guess that is why DH does it. I hate it.

I agree with this regarding strangers (and about Miss Manners) but I'd feel semi-comfortable correcting one of my kids' friends at our house. Only "semi" because I'm never completely comfortable reprimanding anyone else's kid. But this?:

:scared1:

Super gross...I once saw a man spit into a plant inside the bank-a fake plant. Yuck!

I disagree with you when it comes to spitting. People will continue to spit unless others voice their displeasure. In the case of the fellow at Disneyland, he knew he wouldn't do it in front of his mother so why is it okay to do it in front of me?

Plus, what if he had a cold or other malady and it landed on someone?

I think that we can all agree that it's not polite for strangers to spit ON you. If I ever spit ON you, feel free to say saomething.

BTW, changing the parameters of a discussion just so you can 'win' doesn't actually fool anyone.

I love statements like this. Ah, omniscience. It must be nice.

I find it completely disgusting. It makes me sick to my stomach.

As for the poster who says sometimes it's necessary, I ask, at what times? How could it be necessary unless you drink something foul or are vomitting?

It's only necessary--for me, anyway--if I'm running, and even then it's only really necessary in cold weather. The reason is because I have exercise-induced asthma and only about 40% lung function. I think most of the 40% is dedicated to producing snot. Gross, I know, but there's no way I can "just swallow it," as some have suggested, or I'd soon be puking. Personally, if I were a bystander, I'd rather see somebody spit than puke, but maybe I'm in the minority here. ;)

I do not care for spitting but I think the Farmer's Sneeze is worse.

The Farmer's Sneeze is the most disgusting/rude/germy thing someone could do IMO. I seen a kid about 13 years old do that one time on a soccer field & I was appalled that his parents were right there & didn't say anything to him. He was old enough to know that it was inappropriate & disgusting to do it infront of a crowd & in public, but he still did it. But I guess if his parents don't correct him then he'll continue to think it's okay & that he can do it. I found it SO rude & disgusting. I wanted to gag right then & there. Why would you do that? It makes you look dirty. :headache:

It's disgusting and rude. A couple years ago I asked a male friend why do some men spit. He didn't have an answer.

GROSS! Do we still have a puking smilie?

In cases like that, it's understandable. I don't imagine many people are running through theme parks and downtown sidewalks, though, and that's where I seem to see it the most.

Oh, I completely agree. Spitting in non-athletic circumstances is hideously disgusting. I can't even believe someone would spit in a theme park! :sad2:
