I just got this e-mail in as it is being passed around. I certainly hope it works. I have already started boycotting them. I have a hard time believing they need to take us for such high prices when their profit margins were astronomical. Well, they are not getting my dollars!

GAS WAR - an idea that WILL work

Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $ 4.00 a gallon by next summer, and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.79 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to show them that BUYERS control the marketplace..not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How?

Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the REST OF THIS YEAR, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 =3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers.

If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all! (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people....Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am; so trust me on this one.) :-)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you? Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK

I only buy from them when my dad hands me his credit card and tells me to stay in town. They're the only place in town that has gas pumps that still work  . But aside from one purchase from them in March I've only bought from Irving for at least the last year. I certainly hope people will latch onto this idea, and that it could work. From a business stand point it does actually make sense

We have neither in our town, but are we sure that other service stations aren't buying their gas from them? I don't begin to understand it all, so my question may be totally silly.

I make it a point to support any organization featured in these kinds of emails, just to irritate the person who mistakenly thought I would be interested in receiving it...

I remember seeing this awhile ago too. I don't buy gas from Exxon-Mobil... ever. They're usually 5 to 10 cents more expensive than any other gas stations, and for what reason!? I pay for premium gas as it is, so my gas bill is already pretty expensive.

I've received this email this week from 4 different sources. I usually reply by referring the sender to the Snopes link. SIGH!

OK -- so share with me why this would be a hoax. Think about it. If people stop buying gas from certain companies (like other places have been effectively boycotted), then why would it not work? There is no way on this Earth anyone can tell me that the prices should be where they are, especially with profits so ridiculously high. Seriously -- what is your answer . . . why would a boycott not be effective? :confused3

I still don't buy gas from Exxon or Mobil -- again, their profits are wayyyyy too suspiciously high. ;)

Didn't I receive this last summer, and the summer before that, and....

Anyway I can't boycott them. Mobile has the cheapest prices around here! Now BP...thats some expensive gas!

I do, however, boycott the Exxon right near my house because the is charging $0.10 more for credit cards, even the Exxon card. And his station is dark, dingy, and the pumps are slow.

I think the link to the snopes website explains it pretty well.

Even if this were not a hoax it wouldn't really work, people would just buy gas from other stations, the demand would be the same. Besides, how are you supposed to know which stations get gas from where. If there were a big boycott and you called the station to ask them, do you think they would tell you where they got their gas?

That won't cause them to lower the gas prices. They might lay off a few people to counter any sort of loss of profit but they won't lower their prices. Plus a lot of unbranded gas that people flock to because it's cheaper is actually owned by the big named oil companies

And why Exxon Mobil? Around here Shell has the highest prices. Why not Shell/Chevron/Texaco?

I never fill up at one of those stations....I just never pass one. So, I've been "boycotting" and it hasn't done any good. :confused3

;)

I wish that there was a way to fight these monsters but there isn't. We just have to bite the bullet and pay these prices.

Wow, where to start? First Exxon/Mobil is one company so buying from either helps the same bottom line. Second, by boycotting the retail level by not buying certain brands of gas will only hurt the little guy. As in the guy who probably owns and operates the specific station you are boycotting. The major oil companies feel little if no effect from this type of action. They (we I work for one of those big nasty oil companies) make their money in so many other places and demand is so high on a global basis that the oil will still be produced refined and bought somewhere in the world. Also you support the major oil companies in so many other ways every day that you don't think about. Proctor and Gamble who makes all those detergents and soaps and other products are really only marketing and distribution companies. The chemicals division of the major oil companies make all their products under contract. We also make all the bottles they come in as well as thousands of every day items you take for granted like just about anything made of plastic, nylon, rubber, and latex. Emails like the one posted above circulate all the time and I have also seen one calling for a boycotte of Citgo because they are owned by Argintina and the Chavez regime who is distinctly anti American. But unfortunatly efforts of this type have little or no effect at all.
