I came across this gizmo while looking through the August issue of Real Simple magazine. It's called the Snaps on a Bottle, a bottle top tripod that fits onto the top of a water bottle. Check it out.

Has anyone heard anything about this, or has tried it? I figure that it's inexpensive, extremely portable, and who doesn't carry a water bottle around the parks with them?

It's only $8.00, but before purchasing it I thought that I'd throw it out to all of you to see what your thoughts were.

Looking forward to hearing your comments...

Personally, I'd be a little nervous about trusting my camera (even a PnS) to a water bottle's stability.

Interesting how they have the camera on the tripod mounted on a heavy glass bottle or Preeier or something like that but then they show it mounted without camera on a plastic dasani water bottle. The camera they show is probably one of the smallest available and actually kind of looks like a cell phone. I wouldn't trust that product with a p&s of any size, not to mention a DSLR. The top heavy situation is sure to topple the whole setup. Then what? Water spills into your camera?? :scared1:

I'd save your $8. Cool sounding gadget that is not practical.

Just my 2 cents.

Well, I wouldn't leave any camera by itself on this thing. It would be for giving a bit more stability for shots that need it. The problem is that I can't carry much weight due to the fact that I destroyed my back after years of carrying around professional photo equipment. I'm doing good to even carry a camera for a day at the parks and having it on a waist pack.

I've looked into smaller tripods like Gorilla pods, but they're even larger than I can manage.

Any suggestions?

I have a light weight Velobon monpod that I carry around. I have back problems too. It won't work for long exposure type pictures though.

the dslr zoom gorilla pod is only 1/2 a lb so maybe you could leave something else at home and take it.. however, i always leave the tripod in a locker till i need it...it seems like you would have to have something more heavily weighted than a water bottle and the thing looks like a cheap plastic that i don't think would hold much. it's a good idea but i kind of think if you can't hold the light weight camera it shows steady, it's not going to help much for anything bigger
am i the only one who thinks tripods might be getting a little crazy? even with my tremors i can usually hold my rebel xt and a moderate weight lens( which would be 3 or so lbs, more than most p&s)...just thinking except for the rare fireworks type shot is there really that many people who can't hold a p&s steady enough to take a photo?( what some of these tripod things are made for) if so work on your technique people!;);) i mean 1/2 of them have IS already:)

I saw them at Wal-mart.

I think they were just $6 there.

I'm trying to imagine a time when:

A- I did have this "gadget" with me.
B- I didn't have a little tripod with me.
C- I had access to a big bottle of water.

If all of those conditions were met, I guess it might come in handy.

I think it really depends. Some people don't have steady hands because they take medications that make their hands shake. (Anyone with asthma who takes meds for it for example...) Ya never know...That's why I like my monopod. It's so lightweight that I can carry it around all day and I never notice it and it has a built in handle so I just lug it over the shoulder like a purse.

yeah i understand that esp. since i have the problem myself but just the plethora of tripods that i doubt are being bought by that many with those problems vs those who feel compelled to buy a tripod cause someone recommended it...just seems like overkill to me but hey spend your $6 anyway you want to ;) :) :) :)

I would rather something like this:

$15 at walmart and is much more adjustable. Shipping weight is only .7 pounds so it shoul dbe real light without the box!

I think that it is intended that bottle should be on a surface where it does not teeter, and you should have one hand around the bottom of the bottle.

I also have a six inch high tripod. This has "flexible" legs and I seem to spend a lot of time adjusting the legs to get the tripod and camera set up right for each shot. I am not steady enough to use a monopod.

I'm thinking you'd still need to place it on a firm surface so I don't know that it would take the place of a small tripod which I fit in my purse pretty easily. Nice to know it exists, though (and at WalMart, even ;) ). Maybe it will work for someone.

I want to try this out for my video recording. I tend to do lots of video recording while I walk. To have a 710ml Coke bottle acting as a counter weight, I could forsee a lot less "hopping" in my video shots.

And if that doesn't work, meh.... it's under 10 clams.

I always spill my drink...

but, I have never dropped a camera.

i was thinking along those lines as well, 'd fill the bottle with water or worse pop and then i would knock it over trying to steady the camera when someone bumped the table, resulting in ,knowing me, broken lens from fall and ruined camera from pop :lmao: better i stick with something less messy:rotfl2:
