Boston "Big Dig" Tunnel collapse!!

For those of us who live in Mass and even NE can you belive there was a collapse resulting in a death in one of the tunnels of the Big Dig in Boston?! This has to be the worst public works project ever created ! First the leaks were bad enough, now someone lose her life by being CRUSHED by a 3 ton tile. HOw long before the leaking tunnels flood and 500 people drown??

It was just a matter of time. If I have to hear Fat Matt say one more time that "safety is our first priority", I'm going to hurl. Oh, but they're going to make sure it's safe before it reopens. Um....shouldn't they have make sure it was safe prior to opening the thing in the first place?!?

I was heading into the O'Neil Tunnel on the north bound side about a month ago and the entire left lane was closed because of what appeared to be a mudslide....just debris everywhere. No wonder people do 100mph in there....they're trying to save their own lives.

Just watching this on t.v. It is unbelievable. I am so glad I don't drive into Boston every day. I cannot even imagine how scary that is going to be from now on. This project has been a joke from day one.

How does Matt sleep at night knowing about all these potential life taking problems.And I am sure there are plenty of them. The Big Dig has been a Big Problem from the very beginning. If you go through the tunnels make sure you know how to swim.

You know it will be like the Posiden Adventure! I hold my breath each time I am in one of them. I was worried about water rushing in and did not ever think that the ceiling would fall.

Can we get rid of Matt now?? Well at least Howie Carr will have his show pre planned for him.

Did anyone see Matt during his press conference....he had on Burburry shirt. I do not know why that bothered me but mabye it is just that everything "fat Matt" does annoys me.

Wasn't Christy Mihos one of the people who went after Matt? This will be a boon for his campagin.

It occured to me that the poor woman who died was in the wrong place at the wrong time but then again it only makes me think more and more that when it is your time it is your time. I only hope that she did not suffer.

A former Bechtel spokesman is on the radio saying there is no way to assure the people that the tunnels are safe. Great.

My DH drives that tunnel often...he works in South Boston right outside the tunnel.

Most of the time he takes the silver line but he rode in that tunnel just yesterday morning.

Scary stuff.

That is scary. I think Matt and Becktel (sp) Parsons executives should be punished by being made to ride the tunnels non stop for the next 50 years. The stress alone would do them in!

I think they're just re-playing the same speech from Matt. "We're doing everything we can to make sure something like this never happens again." He said that with the leaks. He said that when parts of the ceiling came falling down - luckily it only did vehicle damage. He's saying it again. It's the same speech. I wonder if he's going to bring in the Pops for his next press conference.

No it is a connector tunnel that goes from Mass Pike to the Williams I think from what they are saying. It is going to present problems at the airport.

It's the I-90 connector tunnel.

(I have no idea what that means though since I exit from 93 onto the Leverett connector to go to work)

Try Billions and much of it is financed by Washington.

This project cost $16 BILLION dollars. And in less than two years someone was killed by falling debris. Fatt Matt should be tried for murder.

I am SO HAPPY I come into work early. Everywhere is a mess. 93S, Storrow Drive, Memorial Drive....everything is a mess. I have to take a trip to Cambridge at about 4pm, so I'll be going in the opposite direction and 93N should be OK since everyone will be held back on the lower end. But, I'm prepared for a drive home of a few hours.

They actually think they're going to open it tomorrow. Are they nuts?!

Thank God I don't have to use the tunnels very much. I have to say that Manchester, Worcester and Warwick are all looking much better as options for flying now!!! I don't want to have an 'accident' like that on my way to Logan!!! It's not only sad, it's criminal!!!

They are saying it may be closed for days b/c they may possibly replace all of the tiles in the connector tunnel where the tile collapse occurred.

I would hope it would be closed for a while to investigate before they just start slapping replacements in there.

How frightening. We were just there a little over a week ago, and due to the "wonderful" signage, ended up driving through several "extra" tunnels before we got to our destination.

My thoughts will be with her family.
