Please help me understand borrowing.

I have Feb UY and would like to book a trip for Dec 2018 but I am not 100% certain we will be able to go. Nonetheless, I would like to book it at 11 months to ensure availability (ie. book in Jan 2018) and will need to borrow 2019 points for it. I assume the points are borrowed once the trip is booked, not in Dec when I actually check in. If I decide to cancel the trip, we may not be able to go at all in 2018, and my 2019 borrowed points must be used by Jan 31, 2019 or they are lost. Correct? (The question really is: are borrowed points from the next UY moved into the current UY at the time a reservation is made?)

Yes once the points are borrowed to make the reservation, they are moved at that time. You cannot put them back. So they would expire at the end of January 2019. If you can't make the trip, maybe you could rent out the reservation instead of losing the points.

IMO I would think twice before making a reservation that needs borrowing if I’m uncertain about going or not.

The risk of loosing points is too big so I would recommend waiting and not make the reservation until you know if you can go or not. Maybe you won’t get your home resort but at least you won’t loose your points.

Problem with renting is maybe a renter won’t be able to use all your points leaving you with some points which will expire.
