Borrowing Question

So I've got the concept down, but what I haven't seen on here is when is the soonest I could borrow points?

Let's say 100 points at AKV and Dec UY. I banked 100 in June 2008, receive another 100 in December 2008, and then can borrow 2009 points when? And I'll assume that as soon as I can borrow them I can use them?

You can only borrow at the time you make a reservation.

So, whenever you make a reservation for the time period December 1 2008 thru November 30 2009, you can borrow from your December 2009 points if you need to.

So, let's say you wanted to make a reservation for October 2009 (11 months out). You could make that reservation now, and borrow from 2009 if you wanted to.

Thanks! So if I want to combine 3 years worth of points for a Christmas vacation, I'd be better off having a UY of Jan/Feb/March?

It really doesn't matter, you can always use 3 years of points. If you have to cancel, you would be better off with a use year BEFORE you typically travel.

If you have a February use year, you banking deadline would be September 30. If you cancelled your December trip in November (before 30 days), it would be too late to bank.

If you have an October use year, your banking deadline would be the following May 31.

If I banked Dec 08 I'd have to use them before Dec 09. So I wouldn't be able to have a 3 year point buildup for a Dec 09 Christmas vacation (banked would expire Nov 30, 2009). Right? OR do I have until Nov 30, 2009 to make a reservation with those 2008 points?

No, December 08 points would be good for stays 12/1/08 to 11/30/09. If you banked them, they would be good for stays 12/1/09 to 11/30/10. All points use is based on the date of stay, not when you make the reservation.

keep in mind that UY month has nothing to do with when you can book a room. if you have any concerns about UY impacting when you can call to reserve a room, please disregard them completely before continuing.

now with that out of the way, from what you have described, you banked your 2007 pts in june of 2008...therefore, they will expire at the end of november 2009 and you can't use them for a reservation in dec 2009. that is correct. you would need to rent or find another way to use those pts.

to book dec 2009 with a dec UY, you would bank your 2008 pts (the ones you get on dec 1, 2008) and then call in jan 2009 to book dec 2009 at your home resort...at that time you can borrow your 2010 UY pts if needed.

banked dec 2008 UY pts: good for stays 12-1-09 through 11-30-10
dec 2009 UY pts:good for stays 12-1-09 through 11-30-10
borrowed 2010 UY pts: good for stays 12-1-09 through 11-30-10

(again, to book during that period with any of these UY's pts, you can call at 11 months out at your home resort or 7 months anywhere.)

if you have to cancel more than a month out, a december UY is great because you have a full year to use any pts you have banked or borrowed into the 2009 UY...and plenty of time to decide whether to bank any current UY pts.

if you cancel less than a month out, you still have a full year to try to use your "holding pts."

if you are often traveling in december, a december UY is terrific.

Perfect example! Exactly what I was looking for! So my "3 year" point Christmas vacation would be in 12/09.

yeah, the really confusing thing about december use years is that most of the time they are available to use is during the following calendar year.

so although you banked pts in june 2008 that could originally be used for stays through nov 30, 2008...they were actually pts received in dec 2007. in other words, they were pts from your 2007 UY. that can trip you up a bit if you're not careful...
