I just can't seem to get a grasp on borrowing...here goes.....I have 93 points left for 2011, I want to book a stay that will cost 114 points, which would require me to borrow 21 points from 2012....fine....but when I called, the view that I wanted was not available, so I was thinking of booking the higher view at 132 points (now I have to borrow 39 points)....then I was going to waitlist/change resorts at 7 months....something that may cause me to use less points....member services told me today that if my waitlist comes through for the 114 points, I would have to use the remaining borrowed points (18) by the end of the 2011 use year, or lose them...I asked if they could apply the borrowed points first and then use my current years points (then I would be able to bank them) and they said no...I would just lose them....is this correct?

I do have another trip planned for October, but I have already alloted my 2011 points to that one and have no other plans to travel to the World

Provided that I really understood all that ...

yes, if you end up getting points back if your cheaper waitlist comes through, you can request that Member Services use your borrowed points to cover the reservation, and then you could bank your current years point into the next year. People post about that quite often.

This is what I thought, but member services said "no" and that once borrowed they go into the pot of 2011 and cannot be banked. He stated that the only time they recogize different use year points is when you are using banked points...is this one of those instances when I need to ask three cast members and hope one of them gets it right.:confused3

Well it is correct that borrowed or banked points have to stay where they are. But as long as some of the reservation's points were current use year points, those could still be "unused" (for lack of a better term) and then banked to the next year.

Thanks for the info, I will try member services again and see if I get the same response.

We were recently told the same thing. The CM suggested that she set our wait list up to automatically cancel at the 30 day mark. That way the points wouldn't go into "holding". We were lucky though because 1 of our wait lists came through today :). Now I just have to decide what I want to do with those extra points I know have available;). Like you we were waiting for a standard view.

It also depends when the reservation is in your banking window. If your window has passed you will not be able to bank them.

Yeah, I was going to say that, but then it was leading me into the waitlist 30 day cancellation thing / 7 day waitlist thing-- and it all seemed to get too complicated! So I went with the keep it simple assumption - that the waitlist would end at the 30 day mark before points had to go into holding.

Definitely not correct. If you have a reservation and you use borrowed points and current use year points, the use year points go back into that use year and as long as you have time left in the use year can be banked or used.

You just have to make sure if you change the reservation the CM puts back the use year points and not the borrowed ones.

Thanks you all, I called back member services today, got a completely different answer...was told that the computer would automatically use borrowed points first if I made a change...so, I took my chances...
