Borrowing Points: What happens if?

Hi Gang,

Just a little pre-planning for a vacation in October 2007. Our home resort is SSR , we have 175 points and a use year of June.

We are planning a 12 night stay in a 2BR villa. We will be banking 51 2006 points, using all 2007 points, and borrowing all but 1 2008 points. It will cost 400 points at SSR. Dates are somewhat important so we plan on reserving 11 months out.

If we stayed at OKW it would only be 352 points. Saving those 48 points could come in handy for furture vacations (likely in 2009).

My question is this: if at the 7 month window we succeed in getting a 2BR villa at OKW for 352 points and cancel our 400 point SSR reservation, what happens to the 48 points?

Do they get put into our 2007 use year?

Can they be put back into the 2008 use year?

Or, do I need to be more creative to keep some points in my 2008 use year? If I book 11 nights at SSR (instead of 12) at the 11 month window, skip a Friday night in the middle, we will save 55 points and initially not have to borrow as many 2008 points. If we get our OKW request at 7 months, then we'll just borrow another 7 points for 2008.

If you book at the 7 month window, the 48 'released' points will be native 2007 UY points. Dependng on your banking deadlines they will be bankable or transferrable.

Of course, you should verify that they release the 2007 UY points, if for some reason they didn't, MS can reallocate your points.

Enjoy!

I'd book what I could without borrowing the points you don't plan to use then switch over at 7 months. It is true that the points freed up might be bankable, but why fool with that if you won't have to.

Having the points put back into the 2007 use year would be the worst case scenario. I think I will opt to book only 11 days -- leaving out a 55 point Friday night. If I cannot get the 12 nights at OKW at 7 months, then I will just pick up the extra night at SSR.
