Borrowing Points Question

Hi all I have a newbie question---we borrowed points from our '06 use year so that our DD and friend could take in the world at Christmas---the opportunity for her to go this Dec just came up, so we, of course, couldn't get in at SSR, our home resort, or any other DVC Resort for that matter, and booked a room for her at POFQ---now it seems, that it may or may not work out for her to go---right now, we're in limbo---not a good feeling----so, my question is, the CM told us today that we had to book the points by July of '06 or lose them, does this mean that as long as we book a trip, for December of '06 we won't lose those points, or do we have to actually use those points by July of '06? Our use year is August Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone out there is listening----these boards are DEAD ON THE MONEY! If you want to go at Christmas, you'd be wise to book at the 11th month window and play around at the 7th if you wanna try another resort---while WDW might be "slow" between right after Thanksgiving through the 1st-2nd week of December, DVC Resorts ARE NOT!

You've got two things happening here --

Your Use Year is August.

August 2006 points are good for trips from August 1, 2006-July 31, 2007

You "borrowed" them into your August 2005 year. They are now good for trips from August 1, 2005-July 31, 2006. YOU MUST USE THEM BY JULY 31, 2006. They can't be used for a stay on August 1, 2006 or beyond.

However, you did not make a DVC reservation. You used them to book POFQ. This means they can no longer be used at the DVC resorts. They can only be used for non-DVC options. They are referred to as "reservation" points in MS lingo.

So, if you cancel...you must use the points for a non-DVC option with the final night they are good for being July 31, 2006. Keep in mind that you can take a non-DVC option right up until July 31, 2006 but your last day to make a reservation will be the last weekday in May 2006. (Can't make a non-DVC reservation during the last 60 days of your Use Year.).***

If this raises more questions -- fire away. You've got a tricky scenario going.

***I've got my own question. You may be okay on this one since technically you already made a reservation for a non-DVC option. They've got your points to rent and "pay" for something else. You might be able to make reservations in the last 60 days under these circumstances.

If you used your points to stay at POFQ and need to cancel, use them later in the year for Contemporary Resort. Nice place and not too bad for points.

I can' t speak for Pam but DVC has limitations on how close to the end of the use year one can book DC, CC and II options. The reason is they much take the points you give up and use them to secure rooms to rent to raise the cash and therefore pay for your options. In this case since you they already had the points prior, I suspect the 60 days before the end of the use year won't apply. Be careful of the cancellation rules which vary from 3 days to 17 days in some cases and if you miss them you will lose your points completely.

I think Dean and Doc may have cleared up your confusion (and they confirmed my thought). The rule about making reservations during the last 60 days of your Use Year won't apply in this case.

Just to be sure you understand what has happened. Once you make a reservation that is not at one of the DVC resorts, OKW, BWV, BCV, VWL, Vero, Hilton Head or SSR, the points become "reservation points" and can no longer be used to reserve a DVC resort.

Also, if you now use them to book a hotel, cruise, etc (other than Disney resorts), you will be have to pay the associated fee.

going on tour at end of OCT. will most likley buyin then

Already planning vac in June 06 with second family 2 bedroom.
If i borrow most of my next year points 07 .can I borrow 08 points to use in say june of 07 until I get caught back up for what I think I need
or can you only borrow 1yr in advance and that lock thats next yr up.

It depends on your use year. Ours is Sept. We have used all our Sept 2005 points and are already borrowing some of the Sept 2006 points for our Jan 2006 trip (we used mostly Sept 2005 points). We probably won't go to WDW until Mar 2007, so we should have the rest of the Sept 2006 points, plus if we need them, we can borrow our Sept 2007 points for that trip. It's not considered borrowing points if you make a future reservation that occurs in the next use year and uses those point.
