Borrowed Points Question

My family and I decided to borrow points from our Feb. 2012 use year and we booked a trip for this February (2011) at the SSR. However, we waitlisted at the BWV.

My question is this: the BWV is less points than SSR so if my waitlist request comes through, what happens to the extra points that I borrowed and thus won't end up needing? Do they become holding points or can they go back into my 2012 Use Year? Anybody have a similar situation?

If it is changed within 30 days they go into holding and need to be used by the end of your use year. If it is changed more than 30 days out they still expire at the end of your 2011 use year but they can be used without the hold restrictions.

Is the entire reservation borrowed points or is it some current and some borrowed? If it's entire borrowed, then they would remain in the 2011 use year. If it's some current and some borrowed, they could return the current year points to your account and you could then bank them to 2012. Assuming you do that 31 days or more before arrival (after that the holding account comes into play).

Oh ok...thank you both for clearing that up for me. Most are borrowed points but some are from the current use year. The problem I found however, and its happened to me twice, is that it seems like the waitlist comes through at the last minute. In other words, within 30 days of your arrival. Oh well, thanks for the feedback...

For those who don't know:

Most waitlists expire at 31 days for that reason (if the new reservations costs less and the waitlists works closer to arrival than 31 days, the extra points go into holding). You have to specifically ask to keep the waitlist going to 7 days. At 7 days there are no waitlists and you have to call if you still have hope.

Anyway, you have to decide if getting the waitlist is worth possibly losing the extra points (because it can be very hard to use holding points). Sometimes it's worth it and sometimes it isn't. If it isn't, just tell MS to let the waitlist expire at 31 days.

I once "lost" 5 points on a "late-working" waitlist, but it was worth it! I had all but one night of my trip booked in a SV at BWV. The last night was a Pool/Garden. I was happy that the waitlist worked, even though it cost me 5 points. I would have hated moving for the last night.
