Borrowed Points Ordering Rules?

Hi,

I currently have a resvation that is using CY points and borrowed points. Due to the ordering rules, it is using borrowed points first, but I actually want to use CY points first. I need to use some of the borrowed points for the reservation, so can’t get rid of them entirely.

Due to the system ordering rules, I can’t do this myself. I spoke to someone at Member Services who said this won’t be possible.

Is there really no way to do this?

Thanks!

There is some logic to it. Remember that current UY points can still be banked. Once borrowed, those points cannot, nor can they be put back.

Thanks and I do get the logic. I just have transferred points with a different use year than my own, so I want to swap around points to free up earlier use year points, so I can make an earlier reservation.

Doesn’t seem that simple though!

You probably can't do it online yourself, and I may be totally wrong, but logic would dictate that you should be able to use any valid points (that were valid WHEN the reservation was originally made) to 'pay' for any reservation and that you should be able to allocate those as you please. Member services should be able to do this, and I feel like I've done it in years past, but I'm sure the situation is at least slightly different as I have never used mixed UYs. Call and talk to a supervisor. It sounds like you ought to be able to do what you're trying to do, unless there's some detail here that we're missing.

Edited to add: It sounds like what you're trying to do might have some complexities that we aren't seeing in your post now that I just re-read it. Not implying deception at all, but it looks like there may be some between the lines stuff going on here. Plus your nomenclature is slightly different from what we're accustomed to and I'm having to try to decipher it into terms I understand. For example, the fact that you are using mixed UYs is not insignificant, but it wasn't in your first post.

Sorry - it is a little complicated, and I think I was trying to simplify as much as possible for ease of reading. However, recognize that may not work to get the full picture.

I have a June use year. I received December 2022 transfer points. I have a December 2022 reservation that used the December 2022 transfer points, and borrowed points originally from June 2023 (now in June 2022 use year). Currently I only have December 2022 points available.

I want to make a November 2022 reservation, but can’t with the December 2022 transfer points (all I currently have available).

So I was hoping to update my December 2022 reservation to use additional December 2022 transfer points to free up the June borrowed points, so I could use those June points for a November reservation.

However, the system ordering rule will only use the June borrowed points first, and I was wondering if there was anyway around that, or it would be a futile effort.

The system is set up to use banked and borrowed before it will use up current UY points, which includes the transferred points.

The only way around it is to make a fake reservation using the borrowed points you want to save.

Then make the new one using the rest of the borrowed and the current UY. Cancel the fake one and it will return the borrowed points. Just make sure the fake one is at least 31 days out so when you cancel your don’t end up with holding points.

If the trip is already booked, then there is no way around it without canceling it and doing what I said above. That could be a problem if the room is still not there.

This is getting complicated. I'm assuming you purchased the Dec points and they were deposited into your account? I'm thinking the key here may be when the original reservation was made. You can only use points that were valid when you made that reservation and points that you already had in your account when you made that reservation. Any of that in play here?

The only way would be to cancel December, book November, and then go back and secure December again.

That, of course, is not going to work unless you rooms are still there.

Awesome - thank you! Not the answer I was hoping for, but glad to know definitively as I was driving myself crazy thinking there should be someway to do it! I knew this Group would know.

And as much as I would love to free up the points for November, i don’t think cancelling three nights in a studio at Cooper Creek in December and hoping I can somehow get it back is worth the risk!

Much appreciated!
