If I borrowed points to make a ressie does the 31 day out cancel policy not really apply since those points would have to stay in the current use year anyway?
Thanks!

It applies in that they would be put into a "holding account" and be subject to a different set of rules.

Thanks HBC.

So borrowed points canceled before 31 days must be used before the end of that new use year they are in, but if I cancel after 31 days they are in a holding account. Wouldn't this be basically the same? So in essence it doesn't really matter if I cancel after 31 days cause no matter what those points will have to be used before the end of the new use year they are in.

I think I'm confusing myself! Is there something I am missing?

I just borrowed points to complete a VB ressie and I have 2 extra inn rooms for the in-laws. I want to give them the scoop so we don't get the shaft, mainly from my BIL and his wife.

Thanks!

No matter what the points will remain in the use year that you borrowed them into.

The point that I think you are missing is the difference between holding account points and regular points. Regular points are just that. You can use them any way you want. Holding account points however can only be used to make reservations 60 days or less from the check in date.

OK, I think I got it.

So that would be the only difference. Regardless those points will have to be used before the end is up.

Is it hard to get a ressie 60 days out somewhere?

That is really the only difference that I know of. The usual stuff like they can't be banked and they will expire at the end of the use year don't apply in this case since they are already borrowed.

Whether it's hard to get a ressie all comes down to when you want to go. You know that for the beginning of December it will be impossible but for many other times of the year, it can happen.

Good luck with the reservation. I hope they don't back out on you.

I really hate it when points go into holding. As DVCers, we generally plan 11 months out - but having to wait until 60 days out is quite hard. But I guess it beats the alternative of just losing the points!!!

Shan, the only worry we had with our points in holding was that we have a Feb. UY and were wanting Christmastime reservations. We couldn't make ressies until Mid-October and were worried that if we went on a waitlist - we might get stuck without reservations and then there would be no time left that we would be able to take off to use the points. I think if you're flexible about when you want to use points in holding and it's not to close to the end of your UY, you'll be fine.

If you have to cancel part of a reservation, be sure they use the borrowed points for the remaining portion of the ressie. And free up the "regular" points.

Don't assume they will do that. Even after you have instructed them to do so the first time.

It does make a difference when you cancel even if the points have to be used by the end of your use year. You'll want to avoid the Holding Account if at all possible. The holding account adds additonal restrictions on how you may use your points.

If you are within 60 days of the end of your use year Holding Account points are very difficult to use. The only thing you can effectively use them for is DVC resorts and as already mentioned, availability is often very limited 60 days or less from arrival.

If you are within 60 days of the end of your use year, you cannot use Holding Account points for a stay at any of the "Collections", because of the "60 Day" rule. That rule says that you cannot make a reservation for one of the "Collections" options during the last 60 days of your use year if the stay will also occur during the last 60 days of your use year.

You may be able to make a late deposit into II - not totally sure how that works. My assumption is that it depends on whether MS can find any availability at a DVCresort to deposit into II for the exchange.

Bottom Line: Cancel at least 31 days ahead of arrival if you possibly can.

Best wishes -

Thanks. It appears we would have time. The trip is in late May/early June and our use year is December.
So if I couldn't get a DVC resort within 60 days I could still book another WDW resort? It just has to be before 60 days of the end of my use year. Do I have it right?

Thanks!

Sounds like you are assuming you had to cancel 30 days or less ahead of tme and your points went into the Holding Account. If so, yes, I think you got it.

With a December use yar, you could use holding account points to stay at a non-DVC WDW resort as long as you made the reservation 60 days or less ahead of arrival and you were able to call to make the reservation before the end of September.

Hope I haven't confused you!

Best wishes-
