No, the holiday already happened. If you were in a predominately African American area the day AFTER election day--- it was like Christmas, June 19th, and all the other Holy Days put together.
I had never ever experienced anything like it. I saw cheering in the streets, people dancing, and there were "riot-like" things going on.
It was near impossible to teach that day.. I had students shouting out Obama... all day long. There was sponteanous singing of We shall Overcome all day long.
However, I did hear "We beat the Whitey" all day long.
There were upsides to this.. there were no slow moving cars (drive bys) near the school that day. There was no gang violence that day. Nobody got suspended for fighting that day.
I've been seeing Barack Obama coloring books, bootleg Tshirts, buttons, inspirational posters, velvet paintings (along with Malcolm X and Martin Luther king in profile), gold buttons, even brass knuckles that say HOPE-- since about October.
