My dsis 10 is all about BOY things right now. shes into boy toys, boy books. Im at loss as to what to get her to read. What would you reccomend for a child that age?

My DD10 is not really a tomboy, but she isn't into princesses either. Some of her favorite book series:

Harry Potter
Inkheart, Inkspell and Inkdeath
Peter and the Star Catchers (new book in the series coming out tomorrow :cool1:)
Series of Unfortunate Events
Percy Jackson and the Olympians

She also loves books by Kate DiCamillo - Because of Winn Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, The Magician's Elephant (new last month).

She has enjoyed the 39 Clues series by Scholastic - they are easy reads, though.

Kingdom Keepers and Kingdom Keepers 2 were set at WDW - she enjoyed those.

She's a big reader - if none of these sounds good, I can come up with some more!

Grown up tomboy checking in...

I loved Bridge to Terabithia and Chronicles of Narnia because they featured adventurous girls doing "boy" things. I also loved Judy Blume (though some of those were pretty outdated 25 years ago...)

I know those Diary of a Wimpy Kid books are popular. My 10 year old nephew reads them.

You have a lot of good sugestions above:thumbsup2 DD likes books which feature girls who do not allow themselves to be limited by others' perceptions of what girls should be. Does your sister? If yes,
some other possibilities:

Jane Yolen's Pit Dragon Trilogy

The Outlaws of Sherwood (Robin McKinley's retelling of Robin Hood in which Maid Marian is hte best archer in the group)

The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown also by Robin McKinley

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin

The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keately Snyder

Featuring boys, but very fun and a lower reading level if your sis is not to the above yet: The Great Brain books by JD Fitgerald are a lot of fun and there is a while series.

Anything by Tamora Pierce, she is a great fantasy writer for middle to teen readers...She has several different series of books, most of which have at least 3 titles.

The best series to start with IMHO would be the Song of the Lioness Quartet. The first book is (appropriately!) Alanna the First Adventure--the series is all about a girl who pretends to be a boy so she can go to school to learn to be a knight. Much adventure ensues.

I also thought of books by Margaret Peterson Haddix - DD10 really likes Running out of Time, Found and Sent. There is also a shadow chidlren series by Haddix, but DD hasn't read those yet.

She also likes books by Andrew Clements.

OP I came back to see what other books people are recomending--we always are always looking for more good reads--and I noticed your tag:lmao: Please tell me this is not the sister with some guy's boxers on her ceiling:rotfl2: she seems a little young for that;)

When we were in Michigan this summer, we discovered a series of books called "Michigan Chillers" (which take place in various cities in Michigan) by Johnathan Rand. He also has a series called "American Chillers". I just googled it and saw that there is one called "Wisconsin Werewolves", which might be of interest to her since you are in Wisconsin.

My daughters favorites at that age...
The Warriors series are all about cats living in the wild. Erin Hunter
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane by Kate DiCamillo.

My DS (10) really enjoys nonfiction books. Another excellent book is Tom Sawyer. It is a little hard to read, but I have found the abridged versions of it and Huck Finn. Both were a hit.

If she likes Harry Potter type books then I think the Artemis Fowl series and the Charlie Bone series are very good. I have read both (withdrawal from Harry Potter). I also like the Sisters Grimm series...again magical stuff.

Nope, I asked this the other day! The two girls she refers to as her "sisters" are really her first cousins. The "sister" in her tag is her best friend.:confused3

My daughter is almost 10, and this is her favorite book right now! She read it at school, twice!, and I just ordered it for her for her birthday. She just read Peter Pan yesterday, and enjoyed it.

My son is 12, and he loves Harry Potter (of course, so do I!).

I wasn't a tomboy but I loved the Nancy Drew series!

Thanks for that:thumbsup2 I feel much better about the sister's well being now:goodvibes I thought I remembered the OP posting about sisters before and the ywer eboth elementary aged so I was a bit confused. Now I am still a little confused about sisters who are friends and cousins who are sisters:confused3:rotfl2: but I geuss I can't talk as my kids have been known to refer to my best friend as their "uncle Erik" and one of their good friends as their "cousin" :upsidedowI have no siblings so they decided they can adopt some family members to fill out that side of the family tree:rolleyes:

OP--two more good books I loved at 10: Where the Red Fern Grows and Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls.

Another grownup tomboy and bibliophile checking in:

Kingdom Series by Cynthia Voigt
  1. Jackaroo
  2. On Fortune's Wheel
  3. The Wings of a Falcon
  4. Elske

The Dark Is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper
  1. Over Sea, Under Stone
  2. The Dark Is Rising
  3. Greenwitch
  4. The Grey King
  5. Silver On The Tree

The Dalemark Quartet by Diana Wynne Jones (sold as a set often, so I won't bother listing the individual books)

Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

For starters.

Do they still print Trixie Beldon books? I used to LOVE those when I was around that age. I wasn't a tomboy, but Trixie sure was!
